stLouISTThis free* Jazz Speaks program includes scenes from?the award-winning film Keep On Keepin’ On. The?documentary follows 89-year-old Clark Terry over four years to document an unlikely mentorship between Terry and a driven, blind piano prodigy named Justin Kauflin, age 23. Clark mentored Miles Davis as a young musician and is among the few performers ever to have played in Count Basie’s and Duke Ellington’s bands. In Keep On Keepin’ On, as Justin is invited to compete in an elite, international competition while battling terrible stage fright, Clark’s health takes a critical turn for the worse. Over the course of filming, Clark loses his sight, which deepens his bond with Justin. As time passes, we witness two great friends tackling the most demanding challenges of their interwoven lives. The film captures the passing of the torch from a cultural icon to potentially his last student, inspiring viewers in a climactic, cinematic fashion. The film will be followed by a Q&A and performance by Justin Kauflin and his trio.
*Tickets are free and the normal $2.50 per ticket handling fee has been reduced to $1.00. Out of respect for all patrons, we will only seat whole parties. No “holding seats” allowed.
