The number of COVID-19 cases in St. Louis County is steadily rising, though mask mandates or other protective restrictions are “a long ways away,” according to County Executive Same Page. At a press briefing Monday morning, Page said the amount of cases in the county rose by 30% last week compared to the week before. The county now averages 273 new cases of COVID-19 a day.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced this morning that a man and a woman have been charged with stealing more than $35,000 worth of merchandise from nine Home Depot locations in the St. Louis area. By the RFT's unofficial count, there are 10 Home Depots in St. Louis County. The only Home Depot not hit in the crime spree was the one in Ferguson.
A line waits outside of Menya Rui at 4:45 p.m. on a recent Friday evening, 15 minutes before the restaurant opens for its regular dinner service. Inside, owner Steven Pursley and his team set up shop, prepping the dining room and kitchen and awaiting the onslaught of diners that are
There is no depth to which insurrectionist Senator Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, will not sink in his ambitious pursuit of national office. So, it comes as no surprise that Hawley has blatantly pandered to the Republican Party’s wingnut base by proposing that the federal government declare war on one American company: Disney. In his latest bill, titled the Copyright Clause Restoration Act, Hawley proposes stripping Disney of its copyrights on characters such as Mickey Mouse for the specifically stated reason that, in Hawley’s view, Disney is “woke.”
A golden water-like orb against a pink background on a short loop was St. Louis artist Zac Farmer’s first animation for the Angad Arts Hotel (3550 Samuel Shepard Drive, 314-561-0033). Farmer, who has a degree in art from Lindenwood University, was dabbling in 3-D art while working a corporate job when the hotel reached out and asked him to craft an animation for their first biannual exhibit. Farmer combined what he learned at Lindenwood with online video tutorials to start creating 3-D artwork on an old MacBook.
Thousands gathered downtown in Kiener Plaza today to protest the potential overturn of abortion rights in America. On May 2, a leaked opinion indicated that the Supreme Court was set to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey the cases that made abortion access a constitutionally protected right in America. Abortion is still constitutionally protected in the United States, but a decision from the court is expected in June. The St. Louis protest, which kicked off at noon, was part of a larger national day of protest with rallies happening all over the country.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police are looking for a man who they say entered a woman’s shower in a Saint Louis University residence hall the morning of April 23. Police allege the suspect then entered three separate women’s dorm rooms approximately 40 minutes later. All occurred in Griesedieck Hall on West Pine Street after the suspect first entered the building at 8:52 p.m. the night before.
One wonders if Americans will ever tire of the upstairs-downstairs intrigues of the residents of Downton Abbey. As long as it keeps us from recognizing our embedded American class system, perhaps not. It’s simply too delicious to imagine that old-world Brits have a monopoly on social class and that us unfettered Yanks have escaped all that twaddle.
Though indie group Guided By Voices began as a shambling bar band, over the years it has become one of tightest and most ferocious live bands in the country. It’s also one of the most prolific and varied in its stylings. Robert Pollard and his shifting circle of musicians have released 30-plus albums since forming in 1983.
Before Victoria Rose’s Rehab St. Louis (4054 Chouteau Avenue) was the powerhouse dominating the eastern flank of the Grove, the space had long been home to more modest corner bars with narrower appeal. From the 1990s to 2004, it was Grandma’s Rainbow’s End, a sleepy but colorful place with an older, day-drinking clientele.
Big Bounce America is bringing the world's largest bounce house to Brookdale Farms (8004 Twin Rivers, Eureka, 636-938-1005) Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10. Any age can jump, but different age groups have separate sessions. There are also multiple bounce houses to explore, including a competitive sports arena, a giant obstacle course and a space-themed inflatable called “airSpace” that has slides, ball pits and a 25-foot inflatable alien.
The streets in DeMun are little bit smoother thanks to Jamison Ford. Ford lives in Clayton, just on the other side of St. Louis' city limits. He says that over the past two years, after watching pot holes in the city get worse, he's taken it upon himself to repair five of them.
Thinking back to the first show she organized, Lola van Ella pictures speakeasy, 1920s vibes; baggy-pants comedy; performing with the Alley Cat Revue burlesque troupe; and her first fan dance. The event, An Evening at the Ticklish Whisker, took place in 2007 in the Tin Ceiling Theater, which has since become STL Stylehouse. “This is some bare bones stuff,” she says, with a little laugh and some nostalgia for her former self.
America's favorite unhinged lunatic turned convicted criminal turned failing Senate candidate evidently has a new line for his colorful resume these days: driver of luxury automobile with a photo of himself holding a gun plastered onto it. A local man named Sean Chladek spotted Senate hopeful Mark McCloskey cruising the streets of south city this week in his Escalade, which apparently is now covered in decals related to his spectacularly failing run. One prominently featured on the back depicts the moment he and his wife inexplicably lost their minds and needlessly pulled firearms on a crowd of people that was simply walking past their house in the summer of 2020. Chladek tells RFT that when he saw the absurd sight, he felt he had to take a picture.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced today they have charged 24 year old Pennsylvania man Ameal Jones with two counts of second degree domestic assault. Jones was in St. Louis to work for People's Voices For A Change to collect signatures for a ballot petition to legalize marijuana. Jones, his victim and other individuals were staying at a rented house in Overland while working to collect signatures for the petition.
After more than two years of closure brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Louis concert venue the Ready Room is finally returning to the Grove, in the space formerly occupied by Atomic Cowboy at 4140 Manchester Avenue. And according to a press release Thursday afternoon, that's not the only change being made to the beloved venue. In addition to being a destination to catch a concert, the Ready Room will now also operate as a bar and restaurant, with an expanded and fully renovated layout. The Ready Room team, consisting of co-owners Mike Cracchiolo and Rick Giordano, tapped Chef Pepe Kehm of the Clayton restaurant Peno to design the menu, which will deliver a fusion of southern Italian and St. Louis staples.
COVID supply chain issues took down toilet paper, then lumbar, then raisins (weird, since no one actually eats raisins) and then pretty much everything else. Infant formula is the most recent victim. There’s a national shortage that has now hit St. Louis, leaving bleak shelves at some area retailers.
This week's picks for things to do in St. Louis include seeing art and visiting some bars — two of the best things the area has to offer. Don't forget to check out our weekend picks, as well: [content-3] Thursday 05/12
