For most of his adult life, Chris Kelling would head into work donning a stiffly pressed shirt, suit blazer and, sometimes, a pocket square. Though not employer issued, it was the de facto uniform of his job as a hospitality professional at some of the country's top fine-dining restaurants and one he wore with pride as the co-owner and front-of-house face of the sleek Maplewood restaurant Elmwood. Today, Kelling's work ensemble is quite different.
The weekend is nearly here, and there is so much to do. Whether it's taking in a film, catching the city's inaugural block party or supporting local bookshops, St. Louis is sending April out with a bang. If you're already too busy this weekend, there's more going on this week:

Cardinals player Nolan Arenado showed the New York Mets just how St. Louis gets down when threatened today at Busch Stadium. Now, violence is never the answer — but tension was high between the Mets and Cards as Arenado made it to the diamond. Mets players have been hit by a baseball at least 19 times this season, per the New York Post.
The nurses at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital passed a vote of no confidence against hospital administrators, the hospital nurses’ union announced today. The National Nurses Organizing Committee had called for a vote last Wednesday against Rita Fowler, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer, and Chris Greenley, human resources director.
Medical officials say former Missouri state representative Cora Faith Walker’s cause of death was due to a heart disease. First reported by KSDK, St. Louis Medical Examiner Michael Graham says Walker died of a heart condition known as nonischemic cardiomyopathy. Graham explained the condition as a disease of the heart muscle, one that usually affects older people with high blood pressure, but he said that Walker did not have high blood pressure.
St. Louis nonprofit LaunchCode has been helping Missouri inmates learn computer programming skills since 2018. The program has since evolved and expanded — and graduates who have been released have already begun to find jobs; LaunchCode’s Vice President of Impact Haley Shoaf says this is just the beginning.
Tony Nguyen could have opened his debut restaurant anywhere. In fact, he had a couple of attractive offers to do so in Los Angeles where he'd made a name for himself as one of the city's most talented chefs. One prospective investor owned the L.A. Weekly newspaper and offered to finance his dream endeavor; the other wanted to give him space in a soon-to-open hotel.
St. Louis County Council greenlit a $6 million proposal to demolish Jamestown Mall through a unanimous vote Tuesday night. The blighted former mall has sat vacant in unincorporated north St. Louis County for more than a decade.
Here's our non-exhaustive, but quite fun, guide to as many municipalities as we could find in St. Louis county, even if said municipality only has 12 people. Home to one million people and divided into more than 80 municipal cities, St. Louis County is a bizarre and beguiling place. It does not contain the city that bears its name but does suck resources from it.
Last year, an RFT cover story detailed a brutal beating at the downtown City Justice Center, which was captured on surveillance video. The attack on the victim, pseudonymously named Edward, appeared to be undertaken with the blessing of a corrections officer named Demeria Thomas. The story made international news, though Thomas’ motivations remained unknown.
Not all heroes wear capes, but all beers have labels — and 4 Hands Brewing Company (1220 S 8th Street, 314-436-1559) just gave their State Wide hazy pale ale a makeover in celebration of Free Comic Book Day. The label plays on the theme of comic books and superheroes. Free Comic Book Day, which happens May 7, offers up — you guessed it — free comics in order to bring in new customers to stores and raise money for St. Louis Public Libraries.

Male impotence and sexual dysfunction are more common than most people think it is. One of the reasons why many are not aware that male sexual issues are real is because most men don't talk about it. Men who have erectile dysfunction or lack of stamina will rarely if ever visit a doctor or discuss their issue openly with other people.
Last year we wrote about how the Missouri Invasive Plant Task Force was offering to haul away your Bradford pear trees, which are currently blooming all over St. Louis, and replace them with something less terrible. The problem with Bradford pear trees? For one thing, their smell.
I missed poet Dana Levin's call as I was pulling an illegal U-turn on Grand to head to Arsenal. Turns out the coffee shop where we'd agreed to meet in Tower Grove South was closing early.
Beam him up, St. Louis — William Shatner is coming to the city as part of the first FAN EXPO. Formerly produced as Wizard World, which ran from 2013 to 2019, the convention will feature beloved actors from sci-fi favorites, anime standouts, animation stars and voice actors all in one weekend, May 13 through May 15, at America’s Center (701 Convention Plaza, 314-342-5036). Other celebrities planning to attend are Hook’s Dante Basco, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Michael Rooker, The Mandalorian’s Carl Weathers — also of Rocky renown — and other stars of shows such as Smallville, Sons of Anarchy, Supernatural and Clerks.

Over the weekend, we caught wind of a video billboard in New York's Times Square shouting out St. Louis hip-hop. Pretty cool! Turns out, it's been in rotation since Friday, right there next to Forever 21, at 45th Street and 7th Avenue.
The magic of Jon Hamm was on full display Sunday night when the St. Louis Blues played the Anaheim Ducks. The Blues were down 2-0 in the first period. At the start of the second, Hamm joined Bally Sports Midwest announcers John Kelly and Darren Pang in the booth.
Just beyond the bridge overlooking Gravois Avenue sits Papa Legba’s Spiritual Supply (4535 Gravois Avenue, 314-489-4338, call for an appointment) a St. Louis staple for ritualistic tools, spiritual texts, and sacred relics. A unique hand-painted alligator covering the storefront window is enough to intrigue passersby, however a peculiar south city rumor alludes to an even greater mystery inside: a “real life mummy” tucked away in the back of the mystical emporium.
