SLAM’s Matisse and the Sea Exhibit Explores a French Master's Ocean Obsession

Fans of European travels and ocean views conjured by a French master of multiple mediums have much to celebrate this week, as the Saint Louis Art Museum (1 Fine Arts Drive; slam.org) welcomes its new Matisse and the Sea exhibit. The exhibition, which will be on display through Sunday, May 12, is the first to examine the significance of the sea and related imagery across  the well-known French visual artist Henri Matisse’s career.

Police Standoff in Lafayette Square Closes Jefferson Avenue

Police blocked off a swath of Jefferson Avenue near Lafayette Square as an individual barricaded himself in a nearby home and was in a standoff with police and U.S. Marshals this morning. Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department were working with U.S. Marshals to take a suspect into custody when that suspect barricaded himself in a home on the 2300 block of Albion Place, just west of Lafayette Park.

Vicia Wine Garden Will Open in Taqueria Morita's Former Space This Summer

If you're looking for a casual place to nosh this summer, you might want to check out the new wine garden being opened by one of the most acclaimed restaurants in town. Vicia (4260 Forest Park Avenue) announced today that it will be opening Vicia Wine Garden during the summer months. The counter-service spot will take over the open-air pavilion previously home to Vicia's spinoff Taqueria Morita, a casual taco spot that proved so successful, it's getting its own four-seasons space in what used to be Wasabi.

A spokesman for Mayor Tishaura Jones is clapping back at Fox & Friends after the cable news show broadcast two hit pieces on St. Louis — pieces relying on a disgraced former police detective as well as a state senator who lives a full hour outside the city. “We saw the Fox & Friends segments regarding St. Louis crime and noticed that you may be lacking some essential facts regarding crime and safety in the City of St. Louis,” writes Director of Communications Conner Kerrigan, proceeding to outline some of the missing information — including the fact that crime was down dramatically in St. Louis last year.
