A lawsuit filed against the City of St. Louis last week alleges that the city still hasn't resumed recycling pickups — and that it's illegally charging property owners for services it doesn't actually provide. The suit notes that anyone who signs up for water service in St. Louis is also signed up for trash service, which comes with a $14 monthly fee. In its marketing materials, the city says that includes "single stream recycling services" for all residents.

The last outpost of the beloved Lebanese-inflected burger joint Layla has closed without much ado. Layla and the Bad Egg (20 Allen Ave, Suite 130, Webster Groves; laylastl.com) quietly closed its doors in October, a representative from the building's owner confirmed to the RFT today. Michael Koch, director of investments for Novus Companies, says the eatery has been closed since — and will not be reopening. It was one month before the closure that Novus filed a suit against Layla owners Jason and Maria Sparks in St. Louis County Court, seeking $37,376.64 in missing rent, as the St. Louis Business Journal reported at the time.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell is seeking to overturn the conviction of death row inmate Marcellus Williams — using a relatively new state law that allows prosecutors to intervene in cases where they believe someone was wrongly convicted. Williams was found guilty of the 1998 murder of former Post-Dispatch writer Felicia "Lisha" Gayle. Bell filed a motion to vacate that conviction in St. Louis County late Friday. As he writes, DNA evidence discovered in 2017 has cast serious doubt on the jury's conviction.
When Brianna Velarde decided to open a tea shop, one big thing she was hoping to create was a little extra community in Tower Grove East.
