The Webster University Film Series opens 2022 with a bang this week with one of the buzziest international films of 2021, Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’sDrive My Car. Based on a short story of the same name by Haruki Murakami, Drive My Car centers around a theater director dealing with the aftermath of a great tragedy and the relationship he develops with his chauffeur while putting on an unusual production of Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya.
'Curiosities' is the latest in a series of collections by the self-taught fiber artist, who’s created everything from textured landscapes to watercolor-style botanicals in thread.
The business is buoyed by contemporary tastes: The Tuscan architectural style of exposed wooden beams has created demand, and so has the desire for what’s known as “barnwood,” the kind with saw marks and other signs of wear.
“I have work hanging that is actually touching each other. It’s full because I’m not really decorating with the art," says Slein. "I’m living with it and I’m collecting it and I want to be able to see as much of it as possible."
While the massive collection is in a period of planning and transition, there’s no end in sight for the late Larry Giles’ great passion project in Sauget, Illinois.
