21st Annual Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing Celebration Saturday

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 12-4:30 p.m., community members are invited to celebrate Black history at Missouri’s first nationally recognized Underground Railroad site, the historic Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing on the Mississippi Greenway (Riverfront Trail). The event will include a day of educational entertainment in the form of a historical showcase of Black music through the ages. Whether it’s a local band playing traditional tunes to a costumed performer re-enacting a scene to set the stage, guests will watch and hear the decades unfold.
The celebration on the banks of the Mississippi River will feature live music; food and drinks; and artisan goods and crafts for purchase. Family friendly activities and games include Double Dutch jump rope and hula hoop contests, magnetic poetry, landscape painting, St. Louis history activities, and nature activities.
The event is free and open to all ages. There is free parking and a shuttle from the on-street event parking on East Prairie Avenue. There will also be a free community shuttle from the Youth and Family Center (818 Cass Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63106). Both shuttles will begin pickup at noon and run throughout the afternoon. The last shuttle will leave the Mary Meachum site no later than 4:30 p.m.
