What to Expect

This CLE highlights Legal Services’ Microenterprise Program, which provides
free civil legal assistance to low-income entrepreneurs and nonprofits.

Attendees will gain insight into the program and engage in a discussion of legal issues it provides, including business formation, contracts, employment law, intellectual property, tax-exempt status, commercial lease review, regulatory compliance and other  common small business legal issues and ethical concerns.

Whether advising startups or nonprofits, this session offers valuable tools and resources for lawyers to help these organizations thrive while strengthening the communities they serve.

SPEAKERS:
  • Marlene Elliott, Managing Attorney – Legal Services’ Community Economic Development – Microenterprise program
    Marlene will give an overview of the Microenterprise Program, and present a case-study to show some of the small business issues the program assists with.
  • Luke D. Jackson, Attorney – Weigl Law, Legal Services volunteer & Young Friends Board Member
    Luke will discuss challenges and ethical concerns in forming new partnerships and representing corporate clients.
  • Ebony Sheckles, In House Counsel – Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District,  Microenterprise volunteer & Young Friends Board Member
    Ebony will share her experience as a Microenterprise volunteer and provide tips for some of the most common legal matters she handles in this role.
