Choice Neighborhoods Walking Tour - Community Development Week 2025

  •  Monday, April 21, 2025
     1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
     Starts at Loretta Hall Park

Join us for an immersive walking tour through the Near North Side, highlighting the transformative impact of the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative—a cornerstone of urban revitalization launched during the Obama administration. This initiative aims to replace distressed public housing with high-quality, mixed-income communities, while also investing in the people and neighborhoods to foster sustainable development.

In 2016, St. Louis received a $29.5 million CHOICE Implementation Grant to rejuvenate the Near North Side, encompassing areas like Carr Square, Columbus Square, Downtown West, Old North St. Louis, and St. Louis Place. Since then, significant progress has been made:

  • Housing: Nearly 700 new and rehabilitated affordable and mixed-income housing units have been developed, including the revitalization of Preservation Square.
  • Public Art: Community-driven art projects, such as murals and sculptures, have been installed, celebrating local culture and history.
  • Parks and Recreation: New green spaces and recreational facilities, including basketball courts, have been established, promoting health and community engagement.

The tour will conclude at the newly developed St. Louis Place Park, showcasing the remarkable transformation and community spirit that define the CHOICE Neighborhoods Initiative.

Meet at Lorretta Hall Park. No RSVP needed. We'll see you there!
