“From the Deep” is drenched in Hawaii: the topography, the natural elements, the variety and number of wildlife - winged, four footed, and finned - and the geographical history. This is an introspective exhibition which delves deeply into the matters of personal history with reflection and emotion stimulating a depth of inspiration for a wide range of new interests and works, both two and three dimensional, by internationally recognized artist Michael Marshall. Marshall draws from his experiences and connections and a deep interest in all parts of Hawaii, as a resident for the past forty years. He is a St. Louis native who received his education at John Burroughs School, the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and his MFA at Yale University. His work in this exhibition results from a long contemplation of his adopted home, Hawaii, its history, and heritage. It is a deeply intellectual and emotional recognition of Hawaii, marking the influence the physical, geological, and spatial elements the islands of Hawaii have brought to his art.
The works in the exhibition have also been an opportunity for Marshall to explore an interesting use of media. Included in the show are works from a series of drawings that incorporate plaster as an experimental textural element. These were the outcome of a conversation regarding “the rugosity of coral.” He responded to the folds of coral to give shape to the field recorded vocalizations of Hawaii island upland forest birds. The visualization references the sound, moving in and out of the vegetation. Several works in the show also include mixed media drawings that reference planting, and a small selection of monoprints plus watercolor, monoprints plus assemblages, and a monoprint triptych. Marshall considers his assemblages that represent both joy and tragedy to be outliers to his general practice. These assemblages combine non-traditional elements, such as driftwood and fiberglass, to create large scale, layered works in collage format.
Marshall has had a long association with the University of Hawaii, Hilo, as Professor then as Chair of the Art Department. His work has been shown nationally for over forty years and is included in the public collections of the St. Louis Art Museum; University of Hawaii, Hilo; Mexic-Arte Museum of Austin, Texas; University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana; Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina; John Burroughs School, St. Louis, Missouri; the Julia Davis Branch of the St. Louis Public Library; the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in Hilo, Hawaii; and the Honolulu Academy of Art. Atrium is very proud to represent him and to bring this extensive exhibition to our wide range of viewers, followers, and collectors.
