More than Green Beer: History of the Irish in St. Louis

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Missouri History Museum! The City of St. Louis is known for a strong Irish population dating back to the early 19th century, when Irish immigrants left behind starvation and persecution to make new lives for themselves in St. Louis. Join MHS Librarian Emily Jaycox as she highlights one early Irish American neighborhood in St. Louis, the Kerry Patch, settled by immigrants from Kerry County in the mid-19th century. Afterward, performers from the Clark Academy of Irish Dance will take the stage, and you’ll learn about the origins of this traditional Irish dance form. Sláinte!

Before the presentation, join us for happy hour at the Museum. Spin the “Wheel of History” to hear stories of Irish St. Louis at our Historians’ Corner and check out St. Patrick’s Day–themed images from the MHS Collections. Make and take bookmark with a real four-leaf clover (while supplies last)!
