Review: Up Late Brings Outstanding After-Hours Eats to St. Louis

1 year 6 months ago
For the past couple of years, Jason Bockman and Nathan Wright would do two things while working late nights at World's Fair Donuts: bake to ready innumerable doughnuts for the shop's storefront and delivery business, and marvel at just how many people passed through the Shaw-Vandeventer intersection in the middle of the night. For them, the graveyard shift was par for the course.

St. Louis Could Actually Limit Open Carry of Firearms Under New Bill

1 year 6 months ago
A bill filed at the St. Louis Board of Aldermen today would make it much harder for people to brandish loaded assault rifles on the city streets — by limiting open-carry rights to people with a concealed-carry permit. Alderwoman Cara Spencer, who filed the board bill for introduction this Friday, says that while Missouri law does not require concealed-carry permits, it gives municipalities the right to require them for anyone who wants to openly carry a firearm within its borders. Kansas City already does so — and lawyers Spencer consulted believe it would be one way to restrict some firearms in St. Louis, even with Missouri's notoriously lax gun laws.

I Challenged St. Louis Officials to Go Car-Free for One Day

1 year 6 months ago
Even a decade ago, on the occasion of my 30th birthday, I was already arguably an aggrieved cyclist. For a long time now, my husband and I have been a one-car family, and with two jobs where we both have to be in person, that means I mostly bike or take the bus.

Gov. Parson to Appoint New St. Louis Circuit Attorney by Friday

1 year 6 months ago
In brief remarks to the media this afternoon, Governor Mike Parson said that St. Louis will have a new circuit attorney by Friday, but left it somewhat murky who is in charge of the office until then. Parson's remarks follow St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's abrupt resignation this morning. In Gardner's announcement she said that her office was working with St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell "to ensure a comprehensive transition plan is in place" — which many people took as effectively appointing Bell to lead her office amid the transition.

Fox News finally said something that made some damn sense. Greg Gutfeld, a co-host of the conservative news channel's The Five talk show, hyped up the St. Louis-duo 100 gecs, calling them "probably the best new band" and described them as "The Beach Boys meets Zappa." Gutfeld's comments have since confused anyone even remotely aware of 100 gecs.

1 year 6 months ago
A police officer in north county handcuffed a man and allowed his brother to beat him, according to charges filed yesterday by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Corporal James Sims with the North County Police Cooperative was on duty in Dellwood on November 2 of last year when he received a call from his brother, Robert, who said he was in a fight in Pine Lawn and needed help. Sims responded to the 6200 block of Dardanella, which was outside of the area where Sims was supposed to be patrolling.
