This afternoon, Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced her resignation, sparing herself and the city of St. Louis a grueling summer. Gardner wrote that it is with "a heavy heart but a steadfast resolve" that she is resigning her position effective June 1. Gardner has been the circuit attorney since 2016.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified “several sources for investigation” after taking air samples in south St. Louis city neighborhoods over reports of a toxic fume smell. In a letter to Representative Cori Bush (D-St. Louis) on Tuesday, the EPA confirmed its intent to investigate the source of mysterious odors in south city after receiving multiple complaints from concerned residents.
I was talking to a cannabis business owner I’ve known for a while and respect. The man, who is white, told me he refused to use the term “marijuana” because it’s racist.
Stevie Pimblott has lived on Cherokee Street for eight years, and in that time he’s lost “a good number of people” to heroin and now, fentanyl, he says. “It just kind of got the point where it was like, ‘Why is there no naloxone in the streets?’” He says.

There's a new comedy club in town — and, this being St. Louis, it's also a wine bar and a restaurant and a spot for live music.
South Grand was the place to be last month. Well, more specifically, inside the four walls of 3139 South Grand Boulevard, which now houses not only longstanding natural wine shop and bar Grand Spirits but also two new concepts: New Society and Grand Sammies & Sides. The former is a cocktail lounge from Grand Spirits co-owner Michael Fricker and Netflix's Drink Masters' Meredith Berry.
I made a rookie mistake at Mike's Italian Beef (8001 MacKenzie Road, Affton; 314-282-0007), the Affton sandwich shop based around Chicago's quintessential sandwich. After unwrapping the restaurant's namesake sandwich — a mammoth portion of tender, paper-thin-sliced, jus-soaked top-round nestled into a pillowy hoagie roll and smothered in piquant giardiniera — I knew I should probably grab some napkins before digging in.
Cinco de Mayo is typically all about the Mexican beer and tequila, but for us potheads, there will be other options this weekend. Cola Lounge (2834 Cherokee Street) is hosting Cinco de High'O, an event that blends bud and a taco bar, which is a pretty great combination if you ask us. The event costs $30 but includes the birria taco bar from Rooted Buds.
One thing you don't expect upon turning on a favorite comedy podcast is for your ears to be assaulted by the sounds of people struggling to pronounce your hometown's beloved food and landmarks. Yet, that was the horror that met me when I hit play on a recent episode of the Doughboys this morning and heard the co-host, actor Mike Mitchell (The Tomorrow War, Love), and guest, comedian Mike Glazer (Weed and Grub), trying to say Imo's. Deep breath.
Jackson Mahomes, a social media influencer and brother of Kansas City Chiefs athlete Patrick Mahomes, has been arrested for aggravated sexual battery. As reported by TMZ, Jackson Mahomes was arrested on Wednesday for an alleged incident in Kansas City two months ago. Mahomes, 22, was accused of sexually and physically assaulting the owner of Aspen's Restaurant and Lounge in Overland Park.
Embattled St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is currently enrolled in an advanced nursing program at St. Louis University, the school's registrar's office has confirmed. Before becoming a state representative in 2013, Gardner was a registered nurse, and she appears to be furthering her nursing education in that field even as her office has shed an alarming number of staffers.
Taco aficionados know that St. Louis Taco Week happens in the fall. In fact, this year it will be October 9 to 15. So if you do the math, we're halfway to Taco Week, which deserves its own mini-celebration.
They've started calling me "the toast of LaSalle Park." Well, not really, but I feel like that in the wake of my November 16 Riverfront Times cover story, "The Bricks that Bind," about the friendship of Geoff Story and Barbara Clark, who owned the same Morrison Avenue house a decade apart and bonded over its history.
Anyone that spent real time at the West End Grill and Pub (a.k.a. WEGAP) will walk into Black Mountain Wine House (a.k.a. blk mtn) with strong first impressions. Already, only a month into service, co-owner and proprietor Joe Baker has been fielding feedback, and it's ranged widely.
For the third time in as many weekdays, an assistant circuit attorney parted ways with Kim Gardner's office yesterday. Kiersten Heiman gave notice Tuesday that she is resigning from the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, a source familiar with the office says. Heiman's job was to present cases before the grand jury, the group of citizens who decide if there is ample evidence upon which prosecutors can issue indictments.
A new episode of HBO’s show Somebody Somewhere captured St. Louis’ endearing trashiness. Set in Manhattan, Kansas, the series covers the platonic love story of Sam (played by comedian and Kansas native Bridget Everett) and Joel (Jeff Hiller).
Alejandro and his sister Amalia “Molly” Arroyo are trying to make sense of their lives and futures after the death of their mother, the proprietor of a popular neighborhood bodega and deli, just a few months ago. Tesseract Theatre Company, Director Brittanie Gunn and a fully committed cast tell the siblings’ stories in the life-affirming Welcome to Arroyo’s.
One of St. Louis’ favorite vintage stores, MoModerne Design Shop, is moving from Crestwood to City Foundry (3730 Foundry Way, cityfoundrystl.com). A post from the company on social media described the move from the space at 8361 Watson Road as “bittersweet,” but the owners say they’re ready for a “new adventure.” The store was in Crestwood for nine years.
Visiting the new Charleville Brewery (16937 Boyd Road, Ste. Genevieve; 573-568-8165; charlevillemo.com) is not like walking into your typical taproom. For one thing, it's a helluva hike, more like a long, winding road trip into the wooded hills of rural Ste.
