Dark Comedy Apples Is Worthy of The Big Screen

2 years 4 months ago
A gray skyline, an empty couch, lonely bed pillows, a clutter of coffee cups, the antique lace that adorns the bust of a woman’s negligee. The first five, five-second shots of Christos Nikou’s Apples march forth to the staccato beat of what sounds like a drum but — as we find out in the sixth shot — is actually the thud of a man’s forehead deliberately knocked against a wall. For a film overtly devoted to the mystery of what goes on inside our minds, the terse montage feels eerily apropos, launching questions that the rest of narrative slowly, and only sparingly, seeks to address.

St. Louis Restaurants Openings and Closings: June 2022

2 years 4 months ago
There's no way to sugarcoat it: June was rough. St. Louis' food scene saw the closings of some beloved spots — Pho Grand, Rise Coffee and Mandarin House all shuttered as the heat came in. But, as rain comes in after a drought, so do the openings after the closings: New sweet treat shops, a rebrand in the form of Jerk Unlimited, an addition to the food truck scene and more all hit the area.

The Witches and Wizards Festival Brings Goth Vibes to O’Fallon

2 years 4 months ago
There are many festivals that happen each year in small towns in the area. Some towns seem to excel at bringing in outsiders, too: They have an apple butter festival and a strawberry festival in Kimmswick, Missouri, that seems to pack ‘em in, for example. But O’Fallon, Illinois, is going a different route.

'Corpse Flower' Will Soon Bloom at Missouri Botanical Garden

2 years 4 months ago
Missouri Botanical Garden's "corpse flower" (legal name Amorphophallus titanum) has given signs it could bloom sometime in the next two weeks. The flower, which gets its street name because its bloom smells like rotting flesh, is notoriously finicky. From seed, a corpse flower takes 5 to 10 years to bloom at all, and when it does, it usually only stays open 12 to 36 hours.
