EDWARDSVILLE – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Dennis Bouvier, PhD, professor in the School of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science, is the recipient of the 2022 Paul Simon Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award . The highly competitive award is annually presented by the SIUE Graduate School to a faculty member who has a proven record of combining scholarship and teaching. The recognition demonstrates the belief that to be a good teacher, one must also be a good scholar. Veteran Educator Sarah Brown Has Huge Impact With Students, Marks 21st Year In Teaching

WORDEN - Sarah Brown, a veteran educator, recently marked 17 years with Edwardsville School District 7. Sarah appears to have been destined to be a teacher. She has taught for 21 years and 15 of those years have included time between the schools in Hamel in Worden. During her time in education, Sarah is known to have had a huge impact on developing her students for the future. Brown knew she wanted to be a teacher for as long as she could remember. “As a child, I taught my dolls and stuffed animals in my playroom, fit with bulletin boards, chalkboards, and old teacher manuals that were given to me.” Brown said children are a joy and that it is a privilege to care for and teach third graders. “Third grade is a year to watch children grow more independent as learners, develop important social skills, brighten up when they find a good book, and still love coming to school.” When she’s not teaching, Brown enjoys spending time with family. Alton Hosts 155th Memorial Day Parade On Monday, May 30

ALTON - For the 155th time, dating back to the end of the Civil War, Alton will host the Memorial Day Parade in honor of our armed forces. The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30. It will begin at Alton Middle School and head up College Avenue toward Upper Alton. This year there will be five parade marshals. Richard Wickenhauser (Marines), Alvin Roderfeld (Navy), Art Williams (Army), Harry Hill, and Jack Green. All five men are WWII veterans. "We wanted to get as many World War II vets in as possible," Steve Schwartz, East End Improvement Spokesman, and Parade Committee Chairman said. "We think that would be the greatest generation to get in." There is a long-running Memorial Day parade in Pennsylvania, however, Schwartz believes Alton's to perhaps be the longest-running one ever. Corps Of Engineers, Belleville, Partner On Sewer Rehabilitation Project

LOUIS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, and Belleville, Illinois, recently entered into a cost-shared Project Partner Agreement, or PPA, for rehabilitation of the East Creek Sewer Separation Project. The project will involve separation of combined sewers as well as construction of a new storm water collection system and expansion of existing storm water detention and pumping facilities. These improvements would not only benefit residences in the project area by reducing sewer backups, but it would also greatly reduce the amount of wastewater the city is required to treat extending the operable life of the wastewater treatment facility. The East Creek Sewer Separation project will be constructed in three phases and located primarily in residential neighborhoods within the city limits of Belleville. Jif Peanut Butter Products Recalled Over Possible Salmonella

A salmonella outbreak linked to Jif brand peanut butter has resulted in 14 illnesses and two hospitalizations across 12 states, according to the CDC. A recall notice includes nearly 50 sizes and types of peanut butter, including creamy, crunchy, natural, and reduced-fat versions. The Jif brand peanut butter was sold at stores nationwide. The recalled products have lot code numbers between 1274425 and 2140425, with “425” at the end of the first seven numbers listed on the back of the label. The CDC recommends throwing away the peanut butter and not eating any recalled products. “This product has a very long shelf life, so be sure to check any Jif peanut butter you have at home to make sure it has not been recalled,” the CDC wrote. The 14 illnesses were recorded between Feb. 17 and May 1. Madison Man Faces First-Degree Murder Charges After Fatal Granite City Shooting

GRANITE CITY - At 8:38 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022, the Granite City Police Department received a report of a shooting in the 2300 block of Edwards Street in Granite City. The caller reported that there was one person that had been shot. As officers responded to the area, they located one male who was in grave condition, and then located the alleged suspect and took him into custody pending further investigation. As officers continued their investigation into the incident, members of the Granite City Fire Department Emergency Medical Services transported the victim from the scene. The victim has been identified as Corey C. Ayers, 48 years of age, from Granite City, and was pronounced deceased from his injuries shortly after the incident by medical personnel. JERSEYVILLE - Approximately 100 people turned out, on Saturday, May 21, to acknowledge the designation of the Jerseyville First Presbyterian Church to the National Register of Historic Places. The celebration was the culmination of a multi-year, labor-intensive process, spearheaded by a committee of the church. "A good time was had by all!" DEA St. Louis Division Collects More Than 38,000 Pounds in Drugs During National Take Back Day Event

LOUIS– On April 30, 2022, communities across the country demonstrated their support for DEA’s annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by dropping off more than 720,000 pounds of unneeded medications at 5,144 collection sites. Since 2010, DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has collected nearly 16 million pounds of unneeded prescription medications. DEA’s St. Louis Division collected a total of 38,592 pounds. Missouri residents turned in 26,879 pounds; Kansas, 7,326 pounds; and southern Illinois, 4,385 pounds. That is slightly more than the November 2021 Take Back Day collection of 37,189 pounds.
