EDWARDSVILLE — Treasurer Chris Slusser reported to Madison County officials on Thursday on the continued growth of its investments. “We are on pace for record returns on county investments,” Slusser said. “We are projecting $5.2 million in investment income this year.” Slusser presented an investment report to the Finance and Government Operations Committee showing the increase in investment income. From 2012 to 2016 the county earned an average of $826,000 annually, Slusser said. “From 2017 to 2022 we’ve averaged $3.96 million,” he said. “That’s a $16 million increase in the past five years.” Slusser said he used his 15 years of investment experience to overhaul the county’s portfolio since taking office in December 2016. “We focused on increasing income by diversifying the portfolio and actively managing the funds,” he said. ST. LOUIS - St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons detectives are currently investigating a murder/suicide in the 300 block of Shepley Drive which resulted in the deaths of two teenage males. On June 11, 2022, at approximately 9:33 PM, St. Louis County police officers from the North County Precinct responded to a call for service for shots fired as well as a ShotSpotter activation in the 300 block of Shepley Drive. Responding officers located two males suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. Both were transported to area hospitals for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Both later succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased. The deceased suspect has been identified as Tadarious Jackson, 19 years of age. The deceased victim has been identified as Quintez Robinson, 15 years of age. Both resided in the 100 block of Windsgate in Covington, Georgia 30016. Mr. Jackson and Mr. Robinson were cousins. ALTON - Abigail Hasty has been named the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club’s 2022 Student of the Year. She joins a select few as the 25th Student of the Year. Hasty is the daughter of Jeanna and Michael Hasty. She will receive a $6,000 scholarship as recognition of her outstanding academic record and participation in school and community activities. During her four years at Alton High School, she has participated in Chamber Strings and Pit Orchestra, tutored students through Mu Alpha Theta, performed with The Symphonic Orchestra, served as President of National Honor Society, and kept at least a 4.5 GPA, which earned her a Platinum Alpha Award - the highest educational distinction offered at AHS. Hasty also represented Illinois during her work with the American Battlefield Trust’s Youth Leadership Team this past year. Trophies were awarded in thirty-seven classes plus five specialty awards. Missouri resident Dennis McBee (who showed his Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500) said, "The day was a little warm, but the show is fabulous and has been good every time we've come." Alton Main Street organized the event (along with Time Machines Unlimited Car Club). Car Show Judge Roy Edwards said, "It's a great event. The car show brings in a lot of people, and once they get here they eat, drink and have fun!". In addition to the car show, there was live music, a pin-up contest, 50-50 drawing, vendor displays, merchant sidewalk sale, and (of course) great food.

PEORIA - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently raised its alert level for monkeypox after more than two dozen cases were identified in the United States. The agency set its alert level at Level 2 , which comes with a recommendation to wear a mask while traveling, along with other enhanced precautions . Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus. When someone is infected, the illness presents with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion, which then progresses to a painful rash and lesions. The illness typically lasts between two to four weeks. Despite its elevated alert level, the CDC maintains the risk for contracting monkeypox is low for the general public. EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County officials continued a discussion on Thursday to lower food truck fees. The Finance Committee discussed the resolution to lower the fee for mobile food service establishments (food trucks) by $200 from $375, but it failed for lack of a motion. County Board member and Finance Chair Chris Guy of Maryville said that the Health Department Committee voted on June 3, 4-1, to lower the fee. The County Board will vote on the issue during its monthly meeting at 5 p.m., June 15. County Board member Jaime Goggin of Edwardsville and member of the finance committee said he is not in agreement with lowering the fees. “When (the County Board) set the fees they looked at the cost to the county,” Goggin said. “It actually costs the county more to inspect a food truck.” In 2018, the county established the operation of food trucks and its permit fees. Goggin said cutting the fee is going to cost the county and it should not fall on taxpayers

PONTOON BEACH - In an effort to keep the Madison County Transit (MCT) Trails clean, welcoming, and appropriate for all ages, MCT is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individuals or groups vandalizing or dumping on the MCT Trails. Although MCT has offered this reward for several years, a recent increase in vandalism and graffiti on the MCT Trails has prompted this reminder. In many cases, the graffiti that is appearing on the trails and in the tunnels is inappropriate, lewd, and not in line with MCT’s mission to provide Madison County residents and visitors with a safe, scenic, and family-friendly venue for outdoor recreation or transportation. Most of the graffiti is being found on the MCT Trails in the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon area.
