ALTON - Local Alton filmmaker, Elle Mercurio-Cherrier has been recognized for producing provocative public service announcements (PSAs) targeting opiate addiction/ sobriety and films. She recently shot a closed set feature film in Alton set to be released in June. Mercurio-Cherrier's "God Help Us" has received nominations for Women in Horror awards. The documentary "God Help Us" will also premiere on April 2 at Jamestown Mall Parking Lot. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs. Moreover, Mothers Against Drunk Driving plans to utilize Mercurio-Cherrier's last year's dramatization of action consequences, "Look to the Flowers," in the campaign. SEE VIDEO: WOOD RIVER - East Alton-Wood River High School had a big celebratory day for a memorable student-athlete Aaron Niemeyer when he signed an athletic scholarship to wrestle at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Niemeyer is also a scholar-athlete. “He has done very well in the classroom over the years that is what we want we are trying to raise expectations on the fields and in the classroom. He is a good example of what we want to see,” East Alton-Wood River High School Athletic Director Mike Beatty said. “This was a big deal for us here because he is such an outstanding wrestler and student. This is our first big signing like this in a while because of COVID where we could be normal. PRINCETON - This week, the family of actor Bruce Willis announced that he has been diagnosed with aphasia. LITCHFIELD – Illinois State Police (ISP) District 18 Commander, Mark Gillock, announces the ISP will conduct Roadside Safety Checks (RSC) in Greene County during the month of April. The RSC combines a strong sense of public awareness and enforcement in order to save lives of the motoring public. These patrols are conducted between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois. Alcohol and drug impairment are a factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois, and throughout the U.S., nearly 10,000 people die each year due to alcohol-impaired driving. The drop-off drive will be Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 8:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. This event will take place at 1 Henry Street. GRANITE CITY – Students from Granite City High School traveled to Edwardsville Thursday to participate in a Unified Sports Day held at Edwardsville High School. Thursday's event was part of the Special Olympics Unified Champion School program. "Today was a very important day as it created a bond between two local community schools. GREENFIELD - Firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Green Street in Greenfield for a house fire at 12:26 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022, and tragically two individuals died in the blaze. The two were an 11-month-female and a 77-year-old female, Greene County Coroner Danny Powell said Thursday night. Powell said that when firefighters arrived at the scene the home was engulfed in flames. Three of the five people were rescued. One of those individuals suffered from smoke inhalation. Coroner Powell said he was called to the scene at 1:15 p.m. and pronounced the two victims dead at the scene. Two law enforcement officers attempted to rescue those involved in the fire and were also taken to hospitals for further treatment. Coroner Powell said he wasn't prepared to release the names of the victims because of notification of next of kin. He described the fire deaths as "tragic," and "very sad." Coroner Powell said the deaths riveted not only all of Greenfield but Greene County. "Ou

EDWARDSVILLE - Third Judicial Circuit Judge Sarah Smith, Circuit Judge Amy Maher, and Circuit Associate Judge Veronica Armouti were selected as Education Faculty for both sessions of the 2022 week-long Judicial Education Conference taking place on April 4-8 and June 13-17, 2022 in Lombard, Illinois. Judge Smith’s course will address Civil Judges’ Disqualification of Counsel, Judge Maher is teaching a course on Dual Status Youth; and Judge Armouti’s course will cover Disability Rights in the Courthouse. ALTON - Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido released today information about arrests on East Broadway. This is what Chief Pulido reported: "On March 28 th , 2022, the Alton Police Department investigated a vehicle burglary that occurred in the 2600 block of Krum Street. During that investigation, a patrol officer was able to follow up on leads related to that case. That officer was able to obtain photographs of a suspect and the vehicle associated with that investigation. "On March 29 th , 2022, at about 2:24 p.m., an Alton Police officer observed the suspect vehicle associated with this case on the parking of Phillips 66, located in the 1600 block of East Broadway. Officers then began coordinating their approach and as they arrived at this parking lot, a person fled on foot. After a foot pursuit, the person was taken into custody a short distance later. VENICE - The Venice Police Department reports today a man shot his girlfriend in the area of old Venice Tech and McKinley Bridge late Tuesday night, then transported the victim to a local hospital. The man was arrested and taken into custody at the hospital. The man, Leon McLendon, 20, of Belleville, now faces a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The Venice Police received the call at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to respond to the old Venice Tech and McKinley Bridge area. McClendon is held on a $200,000 bail at the St. Louis County Police Department. The Illinois State Police also assisted in the case.
