Snake Causes Late Night Power Outage In Granite City Area

2 weeks 2 days ago
GRANITE CITY — More than 2,000 customers in Granite City and Madison experienced a power outage late Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, after a snake made contact with electrical equipment inside a local substation, Ameren Illinois reported. The utility company received several calls about the outage and dispatched a crew just after 10 p.m. to investigate. Upon arrival, workers found a snake on top of a transformer inside the substation. To safely remove the snake, crews coordinated with dispatch to reroute power from alternative sources in the area. Power was fully restored to all affected customers by 2 a.m., and the snake was removed from the substation. Customers were then switched back to their original power source. According to Ameren Illinois, snakes can occasionally cause power outages during the spring and summer months. Recent heavy rains in Madison County may drive snakes to seek higher ground, food, and warmth inside substations. Brian Bretsch, Public and Media Relations

2 weeks 2 days ago
SPRINGFIELD - The theme for this year’s National Fire Prevention Week has been announced and it’s focused on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety. Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day — smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys, to name just a few — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, most everything that’s rechargeable uses this type of battery. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign emphasizes the critical importance of safely using lithium-ion batteries to help prevent fires in our homes,” said Acting Illinois State Fire Marshal Allen Reyne. “By following the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach, we can reduce risks and protect our communities. We look forward to working alongside our partners to share this vital safety message—not only during Fire Prevention Week, but throughout the year—to help build a safer, more fire-resilient Illinois.”

Haine Leads State's Attorneys Of 35 Counties In Calling for Illinoisโ€™ Ban on Firearms To Be Ruled Unconstitutional

2 weeks 2 days ago
EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine has assembled a team of 35 elected State’s Attorneys from across Illinois to file an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals’ Seventh Circuit, arguing Illinois’ ban on so-called assault weapons is unconstitutional. In the amicus brief, also known as a friend-of-the-court brief, the group of State’s Attorneys argues that the ban enacted by Illinois is unconstitutional because it broadly bans entire categories of firearms that are widely owned by law-abiding Illinoisans, and the ban does not follow the historical tradition of firearm regulation in the United States. Haine is the lead attorney for the amicus brief. Additional counsel for the brief are the State’s Attorneys of Brown, Calhoun, Carroll, Christian, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Edwards, Effingham, Gallatin, Hancock, Henry, Iroquois, Jasper, Jefferson, Jersey, Jo Daviess, Johnson, Livingston, Marion, Mercer, Monroe, Ogle,

Giannoulias Raises Awareness to Prevent Elder Financial Abuse

2 weeks 2 days ago
SPRINGFIELD - In advance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Sunday, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is partnering with the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) to highlight the tragic link between social isolation and financial abuse among Illinois’ senior population. Social isolation, whether voluntary or involuntary, can cause an increased risk of financial exploitation for seniors. Scammers frequently target older populations during vulnerable times like health crises or after the death of a loved one, using phony texts, emails or social media posts to convince them to release personal financial information. “Protecting our seniors is crucial in creating a safe environment for all Illinoisans,” said Giannoulias. “Spreading knowledge to older loved ones about financial literacy and the dangers of online scams will help keep them safe.” Giannoulias warned Illinoisans never to click on links from unknown

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is observed annually on June 19. Unplug to Recharge: The Transformative Power of a Digital Detox

2 weeks 2 days ago
Did you know that the average person spends nearly seven hours a day on digital media? This staggering figure highlights how deeply intertwined our lives have become with screens—smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions dominate much of our waking hours. But what happens when we intentionally step away from these devices? Taking a digital detox is more than just a trendy wellness fad; it is a powerful strategy to restore mental clarity, improve physical health, and strengthen personal relationships. The Cognitive Overload of Constant Connectivity Our brains were not designed for the relentless stimulus of digital devices. Every notification, email ping, or social media update triggers a mini dopamine rush, encouraging us to check our screens repeatedly. This cycle can lead to cognitive overload—a state where the brain struggles to process or retain information effectively. Research from the University of California, Irvine, indicates that it can take up to 23

This Day in History on June 16: Soweto Uprising of 1976 in South Africa

2 weeks 2 days ago
June 16 has marked numerous pivotal moments throughout history, spanning continents and cultures. 1963: The Historic March Against Apartheid in South Africa Arguably the most impactful event on June 16 is the Soweto Uprising of 1976 (not 1963, as commonly misstated), which became a defining moment in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. On this day, thousands of Black schoolchildren in the township of Soweto protested against the mandatory use of Afrikaans in schools—a policy many considered oppressive and emblematic of the apartheid regime’s broader racial segregation policies. Though the protest started peacefully, it escalated when police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing many youths, including the widely remembered Hector Pieterson. The uprising galvanized international attention and intensified resistance within South Africa, contributing significantly to the eventual dismantling of apartheid in the early 1990s. June 16 is now commemorated annually
