COLUMBIA – A bear sighting in rural Columbia, Illinois, has captured the attention of Metro East residents and authorities alike. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department shared footage of the sighting Columbia on its Facebook page on Sunday, advising the community on how to handle potential encounters with the animal. The bear was apparently headed in a northerly direction out of Columbia, authorities said. According to the Sheriff’s Department, individuals who encounter a bear should remain calm and back away slowly. If the bear approaches, people are advised to make themselves appear as large as possible. Under no circumstances should residents approach or feed the bears, and any sightings should be reported to authorities immediately. The Columbia Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office have both emphasized the importance of these guidelines. ALTON/EDWARDSVILLE — The Metro East region is set to experience a heatwave with temperatures soaring to 95 degrees on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, and escalating to 100 degrees on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, according to the National Weather Service. However, relief is on the horizon as milder temperatures are forecasted for the remainder of the week, with highs of 83 degrees on Wednesday, 85 degrees on Thursday, and 85 degrees on Friday. A Heat Advisory has been issued from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service in St. Louis said on Monday. Area Musicians Participate in Alton Youth Symphony Summer Camp

ALTON - The Alton Youth Symphony recently hosted their summer camp for young musicians. Third- through eighth-grade students could participate in the summer camp, which ran from July 22–26, 2024. Jamie Pullen, president of AYS, explained that the camp encouraged kids to learn more about music and performance. “It was a great week,” Jamie said. “Really, I was very encouraged by what happened. I think all musical groups took a hit with COVID, so we’ve been in a rebuilding phase. Just to see the number of kids who are ready to come back and start making music together and families who are ready to come out and support that, it was just very encouraging.” The camp welcomed approximately 65 kids to the Ringhausen Building at Lewis and Clark Community College. As an organization, Centerstone provides mental health and substance use treatment to communities across Illinois. Swansea Traffic Stop Uncovers Drugs, Firearm, Cash

SWANSEA — A routine traffic stop on July 25, 2024, led to the discovery of a cache of drugs and a firearm, resulting in multiple charges for three individuals. An officer with the Swansea Police Department pulled over a vehicle in the 2700 block of North Illinois Street and conducted a search based on probable cause. During the search, officers found a Cobra .380 caliber handgun, a large bag of ecstasy tablets, 12 bags of methamphetamine, several other pills, and several hundred dollars in cash. All three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody. The case was subsequently submitted to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. Charges Filed Against Two In Schwegel's Market Forgery Cases

ALTON - Two individuals have been charged with forgery after attempting to pass bad checks on two different occasions at Schwegel's Market in Alton, leading to felonies filed in two separate cases. Duane A. Reams, 37, of Bethalto, and Marquitta M. Davis, 43, of Edwardsville, were both charged on July 29, 2024 with one count each of forgery, both Class 3 felonies. According to Madison County court documents, Reams allegedly passed a bad check in the amount of $2,204.63 to Schwegel’s Market in Alton on Feb 11, 2024. Three months earlier on Nov. 9, 2023, Davis reportedly passed a bad check in the amount of $1,514.54 at the same location. Reams and Davis were both granted pretrial release, and both of their cases were presented by the Alton Police Department. The issuance of charges is based solely upon probable cause and is not an indication of guilt. All subjects charged with criminal offenses are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Cyclist Hit by Vehicle on Route 111 in Pontoon Beach

PONTOON BEACH – A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Illinois Route 111 at Engineer Road on Saturday night. Pontoon Beach Police Department, Long Lake Fire Department, and Mitchell Fire Department responded to the scene. First responders arrived at the scene and, assessing the severity of the injuries called for an Arch Medical Helicopter. However, before the helicopter could arrive, the decision was made to transport the victim by ground ambulance. Authorities have not released further details on the condition of the cyclist. In response to the accident, police closed southbound Route 111 at Interstate 270. As of 10:46 p.m., the southbound lanes remained closed. The Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team has been requested to investigate the incident, aiming to piece together the circumstances that led to the collision. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.

Attorney General Raoul Reminds Illinois Residents They Are Protected From Utility Disconnections During Extreme Heat

CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul is reminding Illinois residents as temperatures rise above 90 F this week, that a recently-effective law protects vulnerable residents from gas or electric utility service disconnections for nonpayment of bills when temperatures are 90 F or above, or when the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat watch, heat advisory or excessive heat warning. Attorney General Raoul initiated the law, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2024. Temperatures around Illinois in the coming days are forecast to above 90 F in places with heat indexes above 100 F. Calhoun Sheriff Announces Aggravated DUI Arrest

HARDIN - On July 7, 2024, at 1:52 a.m., Calhoun County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Zach Hardin conducted a traffic stop on Summit Grove Rd, near Illinois Route 96 in Calhoun County, Illinois. Subsequent to an investigation, the driver, Patrick O. Smith, aged 53, of Pittsfield, Illinois was arrested for the following offenses: Aggravated Driving Under the Influence (5th Offense), Aggravated Driving Under the Influence (While Revoked for DUI) Driving While License Revoked (5th Offense). Smith was arrested without incident and transported to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. As is now required under the provisions of the new House Bill 3653, known as the SAFE-T Act; Smith was booked and released with a Notice to Appear at a later date at the Calhoun County Courthouse. All suspect(s) are innocent until proven guilty.
