EAST ALTON - Community members are invited to participate in a head-shaving event aimed at raising funds for 3-year-old Rory Guss, who was diagnosed with leukemia. The event, titled "Brave the Shave for Rory Faye," is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at Don's No Man's Land at 610 E. St. Louis Ave., East Alton. Rory, currently in remission, will continue her chemotherapy treatments for the next two years. Organizers hope to gather support for the Guss family as they navigate the challenges of Rory's ongoing treatment. The event is being held in partnership with All About U Hair Salon in East Alton. While there is no entry fee to participate, attendees are encouraged to fundraise in advance of the event. JERSEYVILLE – The Jersey County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 25, 2025, warning the public of a string of stop sign thefts on Jersey County roads. “Recently, Jersey County has had several stop signs stolen or destroyed on Grange Hall Road at Sunderland and Crystal Lake Roads, and on Range Line Road at Sunderland Road,” the JSCO wrote in their statement . Potential offenders are reminded the offense is a Class A misdemeanor for which they can and will be arrested and charged. Centerstone, an organization that specializes in mental health and substance use disorder treatment, will host a glo bingo fundraiser on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Alton VFW. GRANITE CITY – Two individuals have been charged in separate cases of child battery filed recently in Madison County. Gordon S. Williams, 40, of Granite City, was charged on Feb. 21, 2025 with a Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery. On Aug. 13, 2024, Williams allegedly struck a 6-year-old child on the legs with a belt, “leaving bruising and red marks,” according to court documents. The Granite City Police Department presented the case against Williams, who was granted pretrial release from custody. In a separate but similar case, Sierra A. Lawson, 25, of Highland, was charged with a Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery on Feb. 18, 2025. Lawson allegedly “struck buttocks multiple times causing extensive bruising.” The victim in this case was 2 years old at the time of the incident on Jan. 3, 2025. CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul today led a coalition of 23 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to act to protect a key provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that guarantees access to critical preventive care for millions of Americans. Raoul and the coalition urge the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a lower court’s decision stating that the structure of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is unconstitutional – a decision that will impair access to lifesaving medical care. Before the ACA’s enactment, many Americans struggled to afford preventive services, such as cancer screenings, which can be lifesaving but were often not covered by insurance. Congress enacted the ACA’s preventive services provision to eliminate this financial barrier by requiring most private insurance plans to cover preventive services recommended by the task force without charging out-of-pocket costs, including copayments or deductibles.

The incident involved Karma, a pit bull that Matt had rescued eight months prior from an abusive environment. BELLEVILLE — Investigators from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services responded to a child welfare check in the 700 block of South 15th Street in Belleville on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025. At approximately 4:08 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, authorities arrived at a residence in the 700 block of South 15th Street in Belleville to conduct the check. While on the scene, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said deputies were confronted by a 31-year-old male suspect who allegedly attacked the investigators. During the altercation, the suspect attempted to disarm one of the officers, leading to the discharge of a deputy's firearm. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire, the sheriff's office reported. As the struggle continued, the officers were able to call for additional assistance, which led to the suspect's eventual arrest. EDWARDSVILLE - An Edwardsville coach and student recently saved a life. During the Edwardsville Community Unit School District #7 Board of Education’s regular meeting on Feb. 24, 2025, Lincoln Middle School Principal Michael Cory introduced the school’s dance team coach, Whitney Klee, and student Hannah as heroes. The quick thinking of Klee and Hannah saved the life of a middle schooler. “I’m going to tell a short little story of what I believe was true heroism,” Cory said. He explained that on the bus ride home from a dance competition, Hannah and her friend Anna were sitting in the back of the bus eating candy when Anna started to choke. “Hannah, being the caring person that she is, leaned over to her friend and said, ‘Hey, are you okay?’ and noticed that she couldn’t breathe,” Cory said. “She couldn’t talk at that point in time, and that’s when Hannah knew something was really, really wrong.”

ALTON – An Alton resident faces multiple felonies in his second case of domestic battery after an argument over a car purchase turned violent. Leonel L. Carter, 39, of Alton, was charged on Feb. 21, 2025 with aggravated domestic battery (a Class 2 felony), his second or subsequent offense of domestic battery (a Class 4 felony), and criminal damage to property (a Class 4 felony). On Jan. 6, 2025, Carter allegedly strangled a household or family member and “struck her in the face with closed fists,” damaging the victim’s personal property in the process, according to court documents.
