1 year 10 months ago
EDWARDSVILLE - Soil and worms are main components of composting, but there’s no need to get your hands dirty with Good Dirt Composting Collective’s initiative to bring New Earth Farm composting services to Edwardsville. New Earth Farm is a St. Louis-based company that makes it easy for residents and businesses to compost. The group supplies buckets to customers, who fill them with food waste throughout the week. New Earth Farm then collects the food waste and adds it to their composting bins. “We’re just trying to totally keep it simple so that folks can participate in doing something good and something green,” owner John Cline said. “People just love being able to do something tangible to help the environment.” Cline and his wife, Stacey, want to expand New Earth Farm services to the Metro East area. They’ve been working with Good Dirt Composting Collective, a composting advocacy and education group in Edwardsville that often provide

HOLIDAY SHORES - A beautiful Fourth of July turned into tragedy for a Holiday Shores family on Tuesday in the 1100 block of Tampico Drive. Holiday Shores Fire Chief Jim O'Brien described the home involved in the fire as "a total loss." He said the family was enjoying the Fourth of July on the Holiday Shores Lake when the fire occurred. Holiday Shores Fire and other departments were called in a mutual aid request around 2 p.m. on Wednesday. O'Brien added that the devastating fire began at the back of the home, then spread to the attic and beyond. Temps were higher than 90 degrees on the day, so it was a very intense situation for firefighters. “We had about 50 firefighters there in the mutual aid call,” he said. “We also had another 30 volunteers from the lake and community who helped them when the fire was extinguished." The chief said many came in flip-flops and swim trunks and tried to help in any way they could. Holiday Shores called for mutual aid with Worden,

The state further clarified that 730 numbers may begin appearing after Friday, but most areas will still have some 618 numbers available. “While many individual 618 telephone numbers remain unassigned, an area code is deemed to be ‘exhausted’ when the last available prefix has been assigned. 1 year 10 months ago
WOOD RIVER - Several Wood River residents made public comments at Monday night’s City Council meeting, and the majority of them called for the resignation of councilmen Bill Dettmers, Dr. David Ayres, and Jeremy Plank. Amy Davis criticized Dettmers for his lawsuit against the city funding the construction of its new recreation center using dollars from a 1% sales tax increase, which was dismissed by a circuit judge who ruled the city was within their rights to fund the project that way. “Mr. Dettmers, your behavior and lawsuits against the city are an embarrassment,” Davis said. “How is it fiscally responsible for a council member to cost the city money by defending itself against your lawsuits? You talk about conflicts of interest with volunteerism - that is a way bigger conflict of interest than any volunteer would ever bring to this community.” Davis added that she believes a law should be put in place that forbids sitting city officials from

Alton Firefighters Support Captain Through Chemotherapy, Exemplify Brotherhood

1 year 10 months ago
ALTON - A brotherhood exists in firefighting and police work that is difficult to compare to other professions. In firefighting, it means firefighters can count on each other, teach and encourage each other, and spend time with each other and their families. When a fellow firefighter has a time of need, the others are there for that team member. It is also a comradeship and family that firefighters together earn through the perils of smoke and soot. Firefighters have to be able to count on one another during some terrible emergencies. Recently, 10 Alton firefighters traveled to Missouri Baptist to support one of their own - Captain Rusty Long - in his last chemotherapy infusion. The Alton firefighters were there to wish him the best when Long rang the bell to signify the end of chemotherapy. Alton Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fisher said the brotherhood and concern for each other develop when you spend 24 hours a day together and get to know each other’s family as a firefighter. “
