Byway Discovery Center and Piasa Park redevelopment part of $10 Million Illinois Capital Grant Development Project ALTON - Plans for the redevelopment of Alton’s Piasa Park including the addition of a new Byway Discovery Center will be presented at the Alton Riverfront Advisory Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Alton City Hall council chambers. The meeting is open to the public and comments are welcome. The much-anticipated project calls for the redesign and redevelopment of Piasa Park – home to the painting of the Piasa Bird on the limestone bluff walls -- and a new state-of-the-art Byway Discovery Center. The project is funded by a Capital Bill Grant received by the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau to create and enhance product development along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway in Alton and Hartford. JERSEYVILLE - Washington St. Barber Shop & Social Club opened at 117 S. Washington St. in Jerseyville a couple weeks ago, and owner/founder Chris Heberling said it’s already proven popular with the community as they gear up for an Open House on April 15. COLLINSVILLE — The City of Collinsville recently completed a review by Moody’s Investor Services, which is required to analyze the overall credit worthiness and financial outlook of the City. As a result of this review, the City will maintain its Aa3 credit rating. There are several key factors that led to this rating being upheld and the negative outlook being removed. The recent vote upholding the City’s Home Rule Status by its citizens was the largest factor leading to this rating. Additional factors include growth in reserves and liquidity through strong financial management, which includes long-term liability management (elimination of debt service), economic developing leading to revenue growth, and management of overall spending to maintain and grow reserves. SOUTH ROXANA - A strongman competition was held in South Roxana last Saturday at The Complex Training Facility. Owner Ryan Szymarek said the event was “the first of its kind” and so successful that they plan to host another competition later this year. “The strongman event was the first of its kind for the gym and in South Roxana that I know of,” Szymarek said. “Even though the weather was terribly cold, we had a great turnout of around 70 people and 10 competitors from gyms around the Illinois and Missouri area.” The event was sanctioned by United States Strongman (USS), which oversees all strongman events throughout the country. EDWARDSVILLE – The Edwardsville Police Department partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state for the holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign from March 10 through March 18, and reported eight citations for impaired driving. “We can’t stress this enough: Impaired driving is illegal, potentially deadly behavior, and it puts the driver, passengers, and all road users at risk,” said Lt. Brandn Whittaker. “The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign helps our law enforcement officers address this problem head-on. CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of 17 attorneys general, filed an amicus brief to uphold and preserve state-law remedies for misconduct by gun manufacturers and sellers. In the brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in the case Estados Unidos Mexicanos v. Smith & Wesson Brands et al ., Raoul and the coalition urge the court to recognize that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) creates only a narrow restriction on state-law remedies against the firearms industry. TROY - Senior midfielder Laney Harshany has been a staple for the Triad High School girl's soccer team and has seen a lot of success. The COVID-19 pandemic canceled her freshman season, but when it was time to get back at it in the 2020-21 season, she, and the rest of the team, got to work. Laney scored 14 goals and had 13 assists in her sophomore season as Triad went undefeated and won a state championship. She was a key part of all that. Then came her junior year. Things started off well for her and the team. She had scored four goals and assisted three while her team began the season on a 15-game win streak. As seen in the photo above, she is sporting a protective knee brace this season. That's because she tore her left ACL and meniscus in May of 2022. BELLEVILLE - Caritas Family Solutions has moved up in the rankings of the largest nonprofits in the St. Louis region. The 2022 report shows Caritas’ moved up from the 16th largest on the 2021 list to the 15th largest in 2022. The rankings were published in a St. Louis Business Journal based on the organization's 2022 fiscal year operating budget. The nonprofit has an operating budget of $45 million. Caritas Family Solutions services include foster care, pregnancy care for women experiencing homelessness, adoption, counseling and independent living for adults with disabilities among other service lines. ALTON - A 48-year-old Alton woman was taken into custody in a theft case on Wednesday morning. Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford reported the following: "At 9:31 a.m. on 03/22/23, the Alton Police Department was contacted regarding a theft from person incident that had just occurred in the 1800 block of E. Broadway, Alton, Illinois. "Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, Brandi Vaughn, 48 years of age, of Alton, had just stolen a woman’s purse from the backseat of the victim’s vehicle. As Vaughn attempted to flee with the purse, she was struck by the victim’s vehicle. "Despite being struck by the vehicle, Vaughn continued to flee on foot. She was subsequently located by officers while hiding in a closet inside an apartment of a nearby apartment complex. She was taken into custody and transported to the Alton Police Department.
