JERSEY COUNTY - The Illinois Department of Transportation announces a lane closure on Illinois 100 at Elsah Creek beginning on Monday, June 27, weather permitting. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction. This closure is needed to perform bridge painting and it should be completed by mid-July. Immediately following the completion of that work, another lane closure will begin on the same road at Chautauqua Creek. Traffic will again be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction. This closure is also needed for bridge painting and should be completed in by mid-August. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, be alert for changing conditions, obey all construction signage, and refrain from using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone.

CHICAGO - Today Governor JB Pritzker signed SB3792 into law, amending the code of multiple acts and agencies to replace references to high school equivalency certificates to State of Illinois High School Diplomas. State Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton) expressed pride to be the House sponsor of this new law. "This will encourage more individuals to complete their GED because their achievement will be the equivalent of a high school diploma," she said. "This will increase job opportunities and improve the future for people and their families,” she added. MADISON COUNTY - The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Madison County Coroner’s Office are involved in what is described by a captain as “a death investigation” near Illinois Route 157 and Pentecostal Lane in the county. Madison County Capt. Will Dimitroff said the 911 call came in at approximately 1:20 p.m. Friday. Multiple deputies are reported at the scene with other law enforcement, along with Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn and staff. Captain Dimitroff said he could not release any more information about the investigation at this time, but more will be released whenever possible.

ALTON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that weather permitting, U.S. Route 67 (Piasa Street), from 20 th Street/College Avenue south to 3 rd Street in Alton located in Madison County, will be closed beginning at 7 a.m. on July 5, 2022. IDOT said today it is expected that this work will take one month to complete. "This closure is needed for Illinois American Water to upgrade its water and wastewater infrastructure," IDOT explained. "This work includes rehabilitating the sanitary sewer system and installing a new water main. A marked detour will be in place to safely guide motorists around the closure. The detour will utilize Illinois Route 111, Illinois Route 3, and Illinois Route 143 to circumvent the closure. Access for local businesses will be maintained throughout the closure." ALTON - Illinois American Water’s Work To Separate The Alton Combined Sewer System And Install New Sanitary Sewers Continues. Here is this week's update. Piasa Valley Area: 9th Street will be closed from east of Alby Street intersection east to George Street. 10th Street is closed between Alby Street and George Street with pavement restoration happening. Brick pavement restoration is currently occurring on 8th Street and some rework of the brick placement on 7th Street. The intersection of 10th Street and Alby Street will close early next week to all traffic for several days to facilitate a storm sewer repair. This work is scheduled to start Tuesday, 6/28/22. One of the main birds of prey in this area is the American Bald Eagle. They are our country’s national symbol but they are also an attraction in my small community. EAST ST. LOUIS – The Public Safety Enforcement Group (PSEG) is investigating a homicide in the 1500 block of Baker in East St. Louis. The call to law enforcement about the situation occurred at 7:17 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. The victim, Deangelo T. LOUIS – Ruben Caraway, 46, described as "the ringleader" of a Houston-based cocaine trafficking operation has been sentenced in the Southern District of Illinois to federal prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, bringing to a successful close an investigation and prosecution that spanned several states and more than five years. On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, Caraway, 46, was sentenced to 360 months in prison and five years of supervised release for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy that resulted in the seizure of $1.2 million dollars in cash, $72,000 in jewelry, and several kilos of cocaine. Caraway was captured in Texas in July 2021, after being a fugitive for more than three and a half years. Letter To The Editor: Madison County board began a fiery debate this month in considering lowering food truck license fees that pitted brick-and-mortar restaurants against the food truck arena. The argument being offered is that food trucks are no different than restaurants so there should be no difference in licensing fees. While there are counterpoints to that argument such as food truck operations are normally restricted to daylight hours, trucks are seasonal, and as an outdoor venue, they cannot offer the accommodations of an indoor dining establishment. The reality is that ultimately it does not matter what side of the fence you stand on. Madison’s neighboring counties have already deemed that there is a difference between food trucks and restaurants, and they set food truck licenses at a lower rate. The real argument that needs to be debated is can Madison County compete with its neighbors and ultimately entice food trucks and the revenue that they bring at the current
