Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8, Kids Heart Challenge 2022 at Zion Lutheran School, Bethalto BETHALTO - Fundraising for the American Heart Association through Kids Heart Challenge is an annual event at Zion Lutheran School, Bethalto, Illinois. One of the noteworthy aspects of this year’s event was the leadership that the school’s Grade 8 students provided. “Younger students always look up to our Grade 8 students,” said Mr. John Zilm, Grade 8 homeroom teacher. “This year, I witnessed those students being leaders and role models for the K through 7 students. We had people walk great distances in the mountains to get care.” That was a key takeaway from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Nursing’s (SON) Bernadette Sobczak, DNP, assistant professor, after leading a clinical service trip to Guatemala in 2017. She and three students in the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) family nurse practitioner (FNP) made the week-long trip with ER Abroad to a remote village in Escuintla. One of the students, Greg Jennings, DNP, is now an instructor and coordinator of the Simulated Learning Center for Health Sciences. “That experience opened my eyes to global care and how much more we can do to ensure people receive the medical care they need, when they need it,” said Jennings. EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville firefighter Sean Douglas was out on a training drive with a new fire pumper at 11:02 a.m. Sunday when he saw what he thought was a fire at a home. Sure enough, when he turned the fire engine around and evaluated the scene, he had to contact the Edwardsville Fire Department to dispatch a fire call. Douglas immediately jumped off the truck and went into action and fought the fire with a hose until help arrived. A Box Alarm was called and Edwardsville was joined by Glen Carbon Fire Protection District and Wood River Fire Department, while Collinsville Fire Department handled Edwardsville's station. The fire was very serious and substantial damage was done to the house, Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford said. PESOTUM – Illinois State Police (ISP) Director Brendan F. Kelly today kicked off the first meeting of the Forensic Science Commission (Commission) charged with ensuring the efficient delivery of forensic science to help ensure swift justice for victims as well as to exonerate the wrongly accused. The Commission builds on the work ISP has done over the past several years to improve forensic services, including reducing the total forensic backlog by 72% in two years. “As governor, I’ve been proud to champion new investments to solve crimes and advance justice for victims, survivors, and their families — including reducing the long-standing DNA backlog and funding the new forensics facility in Decatur,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “The Forensic Science Commission has been an indispensable tool in our fight to solve crimes and pursue justice, and I’m proud to bring these experts together to further improve our state systems.”

EDWARDSVILLE - The Mannie Jackson Centre for the Humanities facility will be leased by the Edwardsville School District 7 for five years after a recent agreement. It was part of a plan by Lewis and Clark Community College President Ken Trzaska after public, then board input, on what to do with the center for the future. The board approved the five-year lease at a regular meeting. Edwardsville School District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Shelton said in a recent interview that he is excited about leasing the Mannie Jackson Center and it will provide some much-needed space for the district. “It is a beautiful facility,” he said. “We are excited that we can also expand some programs with the center’s space.” Edwardsville School District 7 some administrative offices and professional learning are presently being done in the Mannie Jackson Center.

Mike Bost and Illinois Senator Dick Durbin in Washington, D.C., a visit to discuss her work with the American Battlefield Trust. She is an extraordinary student and has a love of history and is currently involved in a project about the Alton Prison. “I was one of fourteen students chosen in the United States to serve on The American Battlefield Trust’s Youth Leadership Team,” Abbie said. “Recently, I met with Representative Mike Bost and discussed why battlefield preservation is important to me. Edwardsville High School's Lucco Gymnasium was filled with orchestra students and those in attendance to view the event. SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today that in response to a sharp drop in the demand for COVID-19 testing services at the ten Community-Based Testing Sites and the anticipated end of federal funding, operations at the locations will end on March 31. IDPH previewed that operations would be winding down when the mask mandate was lifted and has seen traffic at the sites – which carried out more than 1.5 million tests in total throughout their operation – drop precipitously in recent weeks. The sites are currently handling less than one percent of the tests being conducted statewide. The number of daily tests conducted at these sites is on track to be the lowest on record with each site seeing fewer than 50 individuals per day, according to IDPH data. Joanne just celebrated her one-year anniversary with the organization this past week and covers Northern Madison, Macoupin, Greene, Jersey, and Calhoun Counties. Combining her incredible skills in the kitchen and her heart for people, Joanne is leading the way to find both volunteer chefs and families who could use a comforting homemade meal. Joanne said, she "heard about Lasagna Love from a friend (Shelly Lohr) who thought it was a perfect fit!" As the 2019 Lovejoy Human Rights Award recipient, Joanne has been serving our community with a smile since she moved to Alton in 1997.
