Partners To Host Day-Long "College Transit Challenge" On Sept. 20, Reinforcing Benefits Of Transit And Availability Of Metro U-Pass Program

ST. LOUIS - To help underscore the benefits of public transit and encourage area college students, faculty and staff to use the system more regularly, Citizens for Modern Transit, Metro Transit and St. Clair County Transit District are teaming up with five higher education institutions – each of which offer the Metro U-Pass Program – to host the “College Transit Challenge.” Taking place Friday, Sept. 20, this day-long competition will prompt those affiliated with St. Louis Community College, Saint Louis University, Southwestern Illinois College, University of Missouri–St. Louis and Washington University in St. Louis to utilize their Metro U-Pass to take transit as often as they can throughout the day. Ridership will be tracked via mobile texting. The school with the most transit trips will be awarded bragging rights and a traveling championship trophy. ALTON - Alton’s boys soccer team is primed for a strong season under head Coach Greg Nasello after an enormous amount of work by the team and coaches over the summer. Coach Nasello took over the program last year and made extraordinary strides with the team by the end of the season, including a huge win over Southwestern Conference foe O'Flallon. Coach Nasello has high hopes for this year’s boys soccer squad, which opens at home at Public School Stadium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. Alton JV boys soccer opened with a 6-0 win over Roxana in the East Alton-Wood River Tournament. Ohio Men Sentenced to Federal Prison for Burglarizing Southern Illinois Pharmacies of Controlled Substances

EAST ST. LOUIS – A district court judge sentenced two Columbus, Ohio, men to federal prison for burglarizing several pharmacies of oxycodone, hydrocodone and morphine pills with intent to illegally distribute the controlled substances. George H. Cunningham, 42, was sentenced to 100 months’ and Tarvin M. Hamler, III, 43, was sentenced to 96 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances: oxycodone, hydrocodone and morphine, conspiracy to commit burglary involving controlled substances and burglary involving controlled substances. “Targeting, disrupting and burglarizing locally-owned pharmacies that provide vital healthcare services impair rural communities, and controlled substances must be lawfully distributed by medical professionals to help prevent misuse and abuse,” said U.S. Attorney Rachelle Aud Crowe. “I commend the DEA agents for their efforts to piece

Alton Police Make Arrest In Targeted Shooting Incident, Suspect Is A Male Juvenile

ALTON - At 8:05 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, the Alton Police Department responded to reports of gunshots near the intersection of Pearl Street and Liberty Street. Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford said officers promptly arrived at the scene, secured the area, and determined that no individuals were injured in the incident. Preliminary investigations indicate that the individuals targeted by the suspect were not chosen at random. The Alton Police Department confirmed that the shooting was not a random act of violence and reiterated that, fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Alton Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is actively pursuing all leads related to the case. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (618) 463-3505 ext. 634.

Southwestern Illinois Central Labor Council to Host Labor Day Parade in Belleville

BELLEVILLE - The City of Belleville and the Southwestern Illinois Central Labor Council will host their annual Labor Day parade this weekend. Starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, the parade will begin at 2nd and Lincoln Streets and travel through downtown. The route will follow 1st Street, connect to West Monroe Street and South Illinois Street, travel around the Public Square, and then continue to North Illinois Street. They will end at C Street. Organizations are encouraged to line up at 9 a.m. Participants in the parade should contact their organization with any questions about the lineup or parade time.
