On Oct. 9, the Missouri Botanical Garden will host a special event featuring speakers, films and activities that explore the indigenous cultures that lived on the land where the garden sits today as well as the native plants that covered the region.
Highlights include a screening of Gather, an intimate portrait of the growing movement among Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, cultural and political identities through food sovereignty; storytelling by Priscilla Nieto and Harvey Abeyta, who live in the community of Santo Domingo and create jewelry from hand-cut stones and shells; and a lesson on making cordage from the leaves of rattlesnake master.
Various plant labs will also cover rainscaping, the relationship between indigenous cultures and native plants and the creation of food, dyes, medicines, tools and infrastructure from native plants.
