E-Scooters Back in Downtown St. Louis

1 year 7 months ago
St. Louis city is allowing a "soft relaunch" of e-scooters in downtown and Downtown West after banning them last July. Monte Chambers says that Bird, an e-scooter and e-bike short-term rental company, has received a permit from the city to place no more than 50 scooters downtown this weekend. The company has to test "internal compliance" on the ground and will be monitoring the use of the e-scooters starting Friday through the weekend.

Quarrelsome Coffee Taps Science To Make a Better Brew

1 year 7 months ago
The first thing you notice upon entering the doors of the recently opened Quarrelsome Coffee (33 North Sarah Street, quarrelsome.coffee) is just how bright it is.  Located in The Block’s former home in the Central West End, the coffee shop and roaster spans two large, open rooms that are lined with windows.

Andoe's Society Page: The Meteoric Rise of St. Louis' Vogue Ball Scene

1 year 7 months ago
Only a few years ago, our local vogue ball scene felt very underground. I remember following my map through frozen, desolate east-side streets to a seemingly abandoned building. I thought perhaps the affair had been canceled, and then I noticed tire marks in the snow leading down a dark, narrow alley to a rear entrance illuminated by a single bulb.

Today, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft announced he is running for governor, and all we can say is please, make it stop. Our majority-Republican legislature and two extremist GOP senators have already packed the circus tent that is now the state of Missouri.

5 Top Neapolitan-Style Pizzas in St. Louis, Chosen by our Critic

1 year 7 months ago
A Neapolitan-style pizzeria might have 200 different varieties of leopard-spotted pies on its menu, but you only need to try one to know if the place is worth its salt: the Margherita. The quintessence of the form, the original and the pizza from which all else flows, this simple masterpiece of crust, fresh mozzarella, simple tomato sauce and fresh basil doesn't give a pizzeria any room to hide, which is why it tells you whether or not you are dealing with a true pizza artist.

Yes, You Can Bring Your Own Food to Cardinals Games

1 year 7 months ago
The Cardinals may be off to a bit of a lackluster start, but that doesn't mean there haven't already been some highlight reel-worthy plays in the first week of the season. There was Jordan Walker's first big league home run and that insanely good catch by Dylan Carlson — and for those in attendance at Busch Stadium it would have been a shame to have missed either one while stuck in line for nachos. With the MLB's implementation of the pitch clock speeding up the pace of play this season (opening day games this season were on average 26 minutes shorter), those minutes spent in concession lines have only become more precious.

1 year 7 months ago
You may know G Herbo as the rapper who helped popularize drill with his 2012 classic "Kill Shit" with Lil Bibby, or you may know him as the famous ex-boyfriend of Instagram influencer Ari Fletcher. (The 24-year-old rapper generates so much gossip on The Shade Room that he made a song about it.) The controversial Chicago rapper (he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in 2020) is coming to The Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard, 314-726-6161, thepageant.com) on April 20 on tour for his album Survivor's Remorse, which doesn't just showcase his hardcore lyrics about the trauma growing up on Chicago's rough streets but also includes a star-studded lineup of guest appearances.

1 year 7 months ago
The St. Louis Small Press Expo, undeniably, was fun. The event, first launched in 2014, brought together independent creators of books, comics, prints, literary journals, artworks and more for what felt like the ultimate display of all the types of creativity that could be put down on paper.

Review: Katsuya Serves Culinary Artistry in the Delmar Loop

1 year 7 months ago
If you want to understand how serious Katsuya (6301 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-296-3368) is about its katsu, you must consider a most humble ingredient: the breadcrumb. The tiny flakes of breading that coat Katsuya's various katsu dishes may seem like a means to an end — just a blanket of crumbs that allow a cutlet, seemingly the main event, to get a little color and texture after a dunk in the fryer.
