1 year 7 months ago
Hey all you cool cats and kittens, Carole Baskin, the controversial figure from the hit Netflix docuseries Tiger King, is closing down her cat sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue, to merge with Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in the Ozarks. It's good news if you like big cats (or if you have an ex-husband's corpse you need to dispose of). Baskin will be selling her 67-acre Tampa rescue and transporting 35 of her 41 big cats to Eureka Springs in Arkansas, just an hour outside of Branson.

With My Bluegrass Heart, Béla Fleck Returns to Bluegrass After 22 Years

1 year 7 months ago
Béla Fleck might not only be the world's greatest banjo player but also the instrument's boldest explorer. As a synthesizing conceptualist, he has become the sole proprietor of any number of post-bluegrass genres, uniting with the world's greatest jazz, world and classical masters to such an extent that Bélaphiliacs can hardly keep up with the breadth of Béla's talent and ambition. It's a boundless musical virtuosity that has bagged him 15 Grammys and 33 nominations.

The Legendary BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups Is Back

1 year 7 months ago
A shudder of horror went through St. Louis music fans earlier this year when the legendary  BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups (700 South Broadway, bbsjazzbluessoups.com) closed  its doors temporarily for renovations without announcing a reopening date. With Beale on Broadway closing permanently in 2019, many worried that BB's might follow suit. But that fear, thankfully, seems to be unfounded.

Almuttan Family Has Ties to Eyesore Pine Lawn Property

1 year 7 months ago
To call it an eyesore would be an understatement. For years Pine Lawn Alderwoman Dionne Jones has been trying to do something about the pile of charred rubble at Dardanella and Kienlen avenues, but it’s a task made all the harder because she can’t get a straight answer about who owns the property. "You have [neighbors] who are ashamed to invite friends over," she says.

Former Cardinal Todd Stottlemyre Brings Poké to Ballpark Village

1 year 7 months ago
There are your classic ballpark eats: peanuts in a too-tall bag, extra-salted and buttered-up pretzels, dogs with all the fixings, or a cold beer (or two or three — we don’t judge). But St. Louis has a new food item to add to the rooster that’s sure to be an instant classic: Poké bowls.

PETA to Protest at Cardinals Opening Day Today

1 year 7 months ago
Amid the festivities for Cardinals Opening Day, PETA is planning to add a sobering message for Budweiser: Stop chopping off the Clydesdales' tails. Starting at 12:30, PETA will fly a banner that calls out Budweiser for mutilating its famous Clydesdales' tailbones so that the horses will all have a certain aesthetic when hitched to the beer wagon. While the practice may seem harmless, it actually isn't.

St. Lou Fringe Fest Will Open the Floodgates in 2023

1 year 7 months ago
St.  Louis' biggest independent theater festival is going huge this August — offering admittance to every single act that applied. That's something new for St. Lou Fringe Fest, says president and artistic director Matt Kerns. Previously, organizers used something like a lottery system for most of the acts, hand-selecting a few headliners but otherwise leaving selection to chance.

St. Louis Standards: Mission Taco Joint Is a Good Time for All

1 year 7 months ago
Jason Tilford can't help but chuckle at the request he and his brother Adam would often get when they opened their first Mission Taco Joint (Multiple locations, including 6235 Delmar Boulevard, 314-932-5430) on Delmar Boulevard in 2013. "We'd get asked all the time if we had a regular taco," Jason recalls, referring to the Old El Paso-style ground beef and iceberg lettuce concoction of so many St. Louisans' youth. "Sometimes, we'd run them as a tongue-in-cheek special and even put them on the menu as a 'regular taco' at Busch Stadium.

Josh Hawley Cries 'Hate Crimes' as Kids Get Slaughtered

1 year 7 months ago
A shooting that left three kids under the age of 10 dead in Tennessee has Missouri Senator Josh Hawley demanding a hate crime investigation. Never mind that Hawley was the only U.S. senator to vote against a 2021 bill to help victims of hate crimes. Never mind that Hawley failed to call for action after a school shooter targeted students at CVPA High School in St Louis, leaving a teacher and teenager dead and many more injured in the state Hawley supposedly represents (but doesn't actually live in).
