ALTON - Local artist Jenna Muscarella has been busy in recent days painting botanical artwork on a previous utility box in front of Bossanova Martini Lounge and Restaurant on Third Street in Alton. Muscarella was commissioned by Alton Main Street for the project. Muscarella is also an art teacher in the Wood River District. She is originally from Alton and graduated from Alton High School. "I am painting a mural on a gas utility box, hiding an eye sore," she said. "The buildings here are historic and so beautiful and instead of putting a mural on a building, we are putting it here." The artwork is done in conjunction with the foilage and plants in the flower beds. Eventually, Jenna plans to put her free magnets on the painted box. "I love painting," she said. "I do this every day because I am an art teacher. I am also a commissioned artist and painter. I have a gallery in Soulard and a studio in my basement." EDWARSVILLE - Senior center and forward Emerson Weller, who will return to the Edwardsville team after missing the 2021-22 campaign due to a knee injury, signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Missouri-St. Louis in a ceremony held Thursday evening in the high school's Media Center. Weller, who averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2020-21, will be bringing much to the table for the Tritons, who are one of the better teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, considered one of the top Division-II leagues overall in the nation. Weller is also spotlighted as an iCAN Clinic Female Athlete of the Month. "I hope I can just work really hard and kind of work my way up," Weller said during a post-signing interview, "and just really be a good teammate coming into it." ALTON – Senior two-sport athlete for Marquette Catholic Kylie Murray signed her national letter of intent Monday evening. She committed to play volleyball at Baker University, a small, private university located in Baldwin City, Kansas. The other sport in question was soccer, as she was a key center back for the Explorers as an upperclassman. She mentioned that through the help of head soccer coach Brian Hoener, some schools were interested in her for soccer, but that’s not the direction she wanted to head. EDWARDSVILLE - The annual Edwardsville Band Boosters, Tiger Band Art & Craft Fair featured handcrafted items from more than 300 local vendors and was packed through the day on Saturday at EHS. EHS Band Director Ryan Lipscomb said the art and craft fair celebrated its 30th anniversary on Saturday. “This year is great to be back at Edwardsville High School,” he said. “This year we had a great turnout. This couldn’t be done without the hard work of the band boosters organization.” Katie Heiser, a band parent, said she was overwhelmed at the number of people who attended the Saturday event. “The band program is getting better every year,” she said and she added that the support for this special event was outstanding. EDWARDSVILLE - The Veterans Day Parade on Friday night in Downtown Edwardsville endured cold weather but was well attended with a significant amount of participation. Wes Sterling, of the Edwardsville American Legion, said this was the biggest parade for Veterans Day in quite some time with five bands, Jeeps, floats, and an abundance of community members involved. The parade started near Eden Church and flowed into Downtown Edwardsville. Young and old were on both sides of the road with American flags and strong support of those in the military or service backgrounds who participated. "The parade is an opportunity to show support for our veterans," Sterling said. "We definitely want to share this with the younger generation. It is great to look out and see parents teaching them what today - Veterans Day - is all about. The parade was small last year, but it was back better than ever this year."

JERSEYVILLE - Jersey Community High School received an anonymous call Monday morning stating there was a student who had a gun outside of the school’s cafeteria. Principal Jason Brunaugh said the administration followed the Jersey CUSD 100 Safety and Crisis Management protocol where staff and students were put into a lockdown so local law enforcement could investigate the proposed threat. “Once local law enforcement determined there was no threat, the lockdown ended and students returned to their normal routine,” Brunaugh said. “The office received the information shortly before 1 p.m. “Local law enforcement and the superintendent were notified and immediately responded. “At no time was there a gun at school or any threat made to the students. WOOD RIVER - There was a sense of excitement about the future from students who attended the career fair open to all schools last week at East Alton-Wood River High School. Missy Struif, school counselor at East Alton-Wood River, said this was the first year for the career fair, and the school looks forward to doing it again in the future. The kettle campaign will kick off at the Alton Rotary Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. on November 18 at Lincoln Douglas Square in Alton. SOUTH ROXANA - A South Roxana man faces multiple charges after an alleged break-in and burglary on October 29 at an apartment in South Roxana, South Roxana Police Chief Bob Coles said today. The man charged in Madison County was Warren K. Beauford, of South Roxana. Coles said the man faces charges of residential burglary, home invasion, aggravated assault, and domestic battery in the case. The man allegedly took a gun away from the victim in the case and battered her. “We caught him outside the residence and took him into custody,” Coles said. Chief Coles said the victim in the case fired shots at Beauford, but missed him. The suspect Beauford was charged with domestic battery, burglary, home invasion, and aggravated assault, Coles said.

SPRINGFIELD – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced a more than $391 million bipartisan national settlement with Google after an investigation by Raoul and a coalition of attorneys general revealed Google misled consumers about its location tracking practices. Illinois will receive more than $19.5 million under the settlement. “Consumers were deceived by Google as to when their location was being tracked and how that information was used,” Raoul said. “With the proliferation of smart devices that collect increased data on its users, today’s announcement highlights the need for updated privacy laws that more effectively protect consumers.” Raoul and a coalition of 38 attorneys general opened an investigation into Google following a 2018 Associated Press article that revealed Google recorded movements “even when you explicitly tell it not to.” The article focused on two Google account settings: Location History and Web & App Activity

GRANITE CITY - Sophomore quarterback Kendrick Lyons created quite a spark for the Warriors this past football season. Lyons ignited the Warriors' offense with 81 of 153 attempts passing for nine touchdowns and 1,324 yards. He missed the final three games of the season with an injury but will return next year and likely be one of the top quarterbacks in the region. Kendrick is a Stillwater Senior Living Male Athlete of the Month for Granite City. Kendrick’s father, Kindle Lyons, said his son is a chip off the old block. He said this past season, Kendrick took on a leadership role and is headed in the right direction for his high school football career. “The exciting part about it is just being around him,” Kindle Lyons said. “He has a bright future.”
