This is my fourteenth update to the citizens of the 111 th district, as your State Representative. We are about half-way through the 2023 spring legislative session, having already met deadlines for bill introduction, committee passage and House floor passage. We have been in Springfield every week but two since the beginning of January. During 2021-2022, because of Covid, it was much quieter in the Capitol. Now in 2023 the doors are wide open and groups and associations are bringing people back to Springfield to lobby and advocate for their particular issues. I have had many local residents and students from the 111 th visit the Capitol, and I always try to make it to the events that groups host to see local constituents. If I don’t make it, it’s only because a meeting or committee ran long. GODFREY – Twelve teams of area high school students came to George C. Terry River Bend Arena on March 24 for Lewis and Clark Community College’s 16 th Annual Trebuchet Competition. This year, first place in the trebuchet went to Angels Raining Down Destruction from St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis. Second place went to M 3 , a team comprised of area homeschool students, with third place going to Newton’s Finest, from Father McGivney High School. First place in the journaling competition went to team M 3 . The Flingers, from Edwardsville High School, came in second, with Newton’s Finest finishing in third place. The winner of this year’s iPad giveaway was Jakob Stockman from East Alton-Wood River High School. SPRINGFIELD – Collectible coins, sports cards, and jewelry are among the more than 500 unclaimed property items to be auctioned online from April 3 through April 7. “The online auction is an excellent and convenient opportunity to shop for collectibles and other memorabilia,” said Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, whose office oversees unclaimed property in Illinois. “Jewelry, cards, and souvenirs could be a wonderful addition to a personal collection or a unique gift to a friend of relative.” Items to be auctioned include a 14-karat gold link bracelet, Victorian trade cards and a 1924 Saint-Gaudens $20 U.S. gold coin. GRANITE CITY - GCHS Class of 2021 graduate and published author Destiny Burkett was a guest speaker for Young Authors Monday at Coolidge Junior High School. Burkett published "The Magic Mind of a Child", which is a collection of young stories she wrote from third through eighth grade while in GCSD9. She spoke to students and answered questions for 30 minutes, before signing books for each of the Coolidge Young Authors. Burkett is a junior at SIUE majoring in psychology with a minor in creative writing. She credits her family for being an inspiration to write, especially her grandpa who encouraged her to write at a young age.

GODFREY – Coffee lovers, get ready to “round up” and be the change by supporting a new Germania Brew Haus Scholarship for Lewis and Clark Community College students. Beginning Apr. 1, customers will be able to round their purchases to the nearest dollar to benefit the scholarship. The goal is to raise $500. CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul, along with 12 attorneys general, today called for nationwide restrictions on the use of sulfoxaflor, a chemical pesticide that is extremely toxic to bees and other pollinators. The coalition, comprised of some of the nation’s leading agricultural producers, depend on pollinators to sustain their crops and natural ecosystems. In a letter to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Raoul and the coalition warned that the unrestricted use of sulfoxaflor could have devastating effects on pollinators, ultimately harming the economy and endangering the nation’s food security. Raoul urged the EPA to adopt reasonable restrictions on sulfoxaflor’s use and support further research into the pesticide’s potential impacts on human health and the environment. “We must do what we can to protect pollinators, which are critical to Illinois agriculture,” Raoul said. “I am urging the EPA to ensure

LOUIS – State Senator Christopher Belt announced that the Illinois Secretary of State has awarded nearly $2.5 million to the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force to combat carjacking and vehicle thefts in the area. “Carjacking and vehicle thefts are serious crimes that threaten the safety and well-being of our community,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “I am grateful to the Secretary of State’s office for recognizing the importance of this issue and for providing crucial support to help prevent this issue.” The funding originates from the Illinois Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council, which is overseen by the Secretary of State. EDWARDSVILLE – City Park is losing a dear, old friend: A towering maple tree estimated to be about 125 years old will be removed in the near future amid safety concerns about its declining health. The maple tree reaches high into the sky, its branches sprawling far and wide, in a prominent spot in the downtown park. It’s roughly centered between the Edwardsville Public Library and South Buchanan Street. "We've been keeping an eye on it for about five years," said Sarah Cundiff, the chair of the City's Beautification & Tree Commission. "We knew it was declining and have been trying to keep it as long as possible. With that being such an active park, it's a safety concern." An exact date hasn't been set for the tree to be brought down, but it's expected to take place within the next two weeks. GLEN CARBON - The purchase of new body cameras and tasers for the Glen Carbon Police Department was approved by the Glen Carbon Village Board on Tuesday, March 28, among several other agenda items. The Village Board approved the purchase of the “Axon Enterprise bundle,” which includes body cameras, new tasers, and cloud video storage at a total cost of $456,960.20. Police Chief Todd Link said this purchase will help officers adhere to requirements in the SAFE-T Act, including one that all officers be equipped with body cameras no later than January 1, 2025. Link said $113,414 of the cost will be paid in Fiscal Year 2023 using Capital Permit Project Budget funds, with the remaining balance of $343,548 to be paid in installments through Fiscal Year 2027. GLEN CARBON - A "Kicks On 66" car show this fall, open community garden spots, and more were among the announcements from Glen Carbon Mayor Bob Marcus at the most recent Village Board meeting on March 28. Later this fall, a “Kicks On 66” car show will be held at Schon Park. Marcus said the event will feature “over 500 high-end classic cars” as well as vendors, music, and more. The car show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, and more details will be announced as they are finalized. This information rarely caters to nonmonosexuals, sometimes out of unconscious preference for gender, or heterosexual and homosexual, binary. GLEN CARBON - A model train set based on the Village of Glen Carbon was the central attraction at the Metro East Model Railroad Club’s most recent Open House event. Publicity Chairman Bob Gibson said the train set includes models of several historic Glen Carbon buildings along 1,000 feet of track, and is appreciated by visitors of all ages. Gibson said many adults recognize some of the buildings in the miniature depiction of the village, including one visitor who even spotted the house they grew up in. “A lot of the adults will come in and say, ‘Gee, this is really nice,’ and very realistic if you grew up in Glen Carbon, this area. LOUIS – A federal grand jury announced today it returned a 15-count indictment charging a St. Elmo man on several assault and firearms charges after he allegedly opened fire on federal law enforcement agents who attempted to serve an arrest warrant at his residence in Fayette County. TROY - Two-sport athlete Tobey "TJ" Suter has been one to watch early on in this baseball season for the Triad Knights. Through six games and 20 plate appearances, TJ is batting a .421 average. He's got eight hits so far including five doubles. He's also a starting pitcher and has struck out eight batters through two outings and 10 innings pitched.
