ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The family of 39-year-old Jacquelyn Mitchell is thankful a man is in police custody for her crime but now hopes justice will prevail. Maryland Heights and St. Charles police held a joint news conference and said Mitchell and the suspect, Joseph Dejoie exchanged texts the night of March 14. The last time Mitchell was seen alive was on surveillance video, leaving the popular Maggie O’Brien’s restaurant in Sunset Hills. Mitchell apparently went to Dejoie’s apartment after but was not that acquainted with him. Dejoie is charged with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and the abandonment of a corpse. The charges say the 49-year-old Dejoie told police he killed Mitchell and left her body in his bedroom for six days. Police said he also moved her car to another apartment complex less than a half-mile away. Records show he also admitted to wiping down her car and body attempting to hide evidence, records show. SPRINGFIELD - Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced the Illinois House of Representatives passed his legislation to protect vulnerable residents from gas or electric utility service disconnection for nonpayment of bills when temperatures are 90 F or above, or when the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat watch, heat advisory, or excessive heat warning. Raoul initiated House Bill 1541, which was sponsored by Sen. Mattie Hunter and Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado, to amend the Public Utilities Act (PUA), which currently prohibits disconnection when the temperature is 95 F or hotter. However, the PUA does not account for extreme heat events when the heat index may rise to a dangerous level when temperatures are below 95 F. “Summertime heat in Illinois is not the time to put lives at risk. JERSEYVILLE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that intermittent daytime lane closures will take place in both directions of Illinois 16 at Grafton Road/Otterville Road in Jerseyville, weather permitting, on Wednesday, March 29. These lane closures are necessary for the evaluation of pavement conditions. WASHINGTON PARK - A search is ongoing for a missing person from Granite City - Josh Amos - in the East St. Louis/Washington Park area. Josh was last reported seen in East St. Louis. Authorities speculate Josh may have gotten a ride with someone in that area or walked. Josh is described as having an athletic build at 5-10 to 5-11, 190-195 pounds with chest tattoos and a cross on his left bicep, and tattoos on his right lower arm. Byway Discovery Center and Piasa Park redevelopment part of $10 Million Illinois Capital Grant Development Project ALTON - Plans for the redevelopment of Alton’s Piasa Park including the addition of a new Byway Discovery Center will be presented at the Alton Riverfront Advisory Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Alton City Hall council chambers. COLLINSVILLE — The City of Collinsville recently completed a review by Moody’s Investor Services, which is required to analyze the overall credit worthiness and financial outlook of the City. As a result of this review, the City will maintain its Aa3 credit rating. There are several key factors that led to this rating being upheld and the negative outlook being removed. The recent vote upholding the City’s Home Rule Status by its citizens was the largest factor leading to this rating. Additional factors include growth in reserves and liquidity through strong financial management, which includes long-term liability management (elimination of debt service), economic developing leading to revenue growth, and management of overall spending to maintain and grow reserves. SOUTH ROXANA - A strongman competition was held in South Roxana last Saturday at The Complex Training Facility. Owner Ryan Szymarek said the event was “the first of its kind” and so successful that they plan to host another competition later this year. “The strongman event was the first of its kind for the gym and in South Roxana that I know of,” Szymarek said. “Even though the weather was terribly cold, we had a great turnout of around 70 people and 10 competitors from gyms around the Illinois and Missouri area.” The event was sanctioned by United States Strongman (USS), which oversees all strongman events throughout the country. EDWARDSVILLE – The Edwardsville Police Department partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state for the holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign from March 10 through March 18, and reported eight citations for impaired driving. “We can’t stress this enough: Impaired driving is illegal, potentially deadly behavior, and it puts the driver, passengers, and all road users at risk,” said Lt.
