LOUIS, MO. – Today, Mayor Jones’ administration issued a Request for Proposal soliciting proposals from Certified Public Accountants to provide audit services to the Board of Education of the City of St. Louis. “Our parents and families deserve answers,” said Mayor Tishaura O. Jones. “The children of St. Louis and the future of our City are suffering due to mismanagement. Parents and students in St. Louis deserve a school board that is held to the highest standard of financial accountability.” State law (Section 165.181, RSMo.) requires the Mayor to appoint this auditor “at the close of each fiscal school year.” The same law requires the school district to pay for this auditor. The RFP calls for an audit period of three fiscal years starting with the 2023 - 2024 fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law his legislation to clarify that Illinois’ child pornography laws apply to images and videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Joseph, who graduated from Freeburg Community High School in 1958, began his career by serving in the United States Navy for four years. After his military service, he pursued higher education and earned a degree in Criminal Justice from McKendree College. Joseph's law enforcement career commenced in the Village of Freeburg, where he served as a police officer before joining the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department in 1973. ALTON — A fire early Sunday morning, Aug. 11, 2024, completely gutted an unoccupied house undergoing renovation in the 2600 block of Salu Street in Alton, according to local authorities. Firefighters responded to the blaze after receiving a call at 5 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the brick house fully engulfed in flames, with fire burning through the roof. Alton firefighters immediately called for assistance from the East Alton Fire Department. Despite their combined efforts to battle the fire defensively, the house was ultimately gutted and the roof was destroyed. The intense heat from the blaze also caused damage to a neighboring house on the west side, resulting in melted siding and a broken window. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

BELLEVILLE — The identities of a Belleville woman and child who were killed Sunday when a vehicle crashed into a home were released Monday by authorities. Shavonne Green, 35, and Torianna Bohanna, 4, were pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of South 8th Street, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. Green was pronounced dead at 11:44 a.m., and Bohanna at 11:46 a.m., Dye said. On August 11, 2024, at approximately 9:11 a.m., Belleville Police responded to the 100 block of South 8th Street following reports of a vehicle collision that resulted in a structure fire. Upon arrival, officers found a fully involved structure fire and managed to rescue one juvenile male from the building. However, Green and Bohanna were located deceased inside the residence after the fire was extinguished. Preliminary information at the scene indicated that a person of interest fled on foot. Belleville Police, along with several assisting agencies, quickly canvassed the area.

EDWARDSVILLE - More details have surfaced concerning the attempted kidnapping of a child in Edwardsville reported last week on Riverbender.com . Jennifer S. Haley, 60, of Granite City, was charged on Aug. 2, 2024 with one count each of attempted aggravated kidnapping (a Class 1 felony), aggravated battery (a Class 3 felony), and unlawful restraint (A Class 4 felony). The day prior on Aug. 1, 2024, Haley allegedly grabbed a two-year-old child and refused to return them to their mother. COLLINSVILLE — The Collinsville Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the area of Hillside Drive and State Route 157 around 5 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire throughout the house. Several other area fire departments were called in to assist with the blaze. The heavy presence of fire trucks contributed to significant traffic congestion on State Route 157. The house sustained major damage due to the fire. However, no injuries were reported.

BELLEVILLE — A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, August 11, 2024, when a vehicle crashed into a residence on the 100 block of South 8th Street, resulting in the deaths of two individuals inside the home. The Belleville Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 9:11 a.m. Preliminary investigations have identified Matthew K. Thomas as a person of interest. Authorities have reason to believe that Thomas' actions were intentional, leading the case to be investigated as a double homicide. Several local agencies initiated a search for Thomas, who was believed to be armed with a machete.
