ALTON - Alton Fire Department members had a busy afternoon Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, with a structure fire call to the 3100 block of Hawthorne Boulevard. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and Alton Fire Department Chief Jesse Jemison said it took about 20-30 minutes to get it under control. The chief said the fire has been deemed "suspicious" after an investigation. "The house fire is now under investigation by the Office Of The State Fire Marshal," Chief Jemison said.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police Department Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating a homicide in the area of Edgefield Drive and Hollis Drive in the city of Moline Acres that resulted in the death of an adult male. At 6:30 AM, on January 1, 2024, City of Moline Acres police officers responded to a call for service for a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Edgefield Drive and Hollis Drive in the city of Moline Acres. Responding officers located an adult male deceased inside the vehicle. City of Moline Acres Police requested St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons assume responsibility for the investigation. It was determined through the autopsy and information obtained at the scene that the adult male was fatally injured via gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing. SPRINGFIELD - Several new laws initiated by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias take effect today. On December 29th 2023, Deputy Phillips raised his right hand and was sworn in by the Honorable Judge Charles HW Burch. Deputy Phillips was hired during the summer of 2023 and attended the Southwestern Illinois Police Academy; graduating on December 22nd 2023. Deputy Phillips is a native of Greene County, Illinois and a graduate of Illinois College, where he majored in Communications and History. WOOD RIVER – Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells confirmed Monday night, Jan. 1, 2024, that his department worked on a reported stabbing. The stabbing report came from the 300 block of Marquis Avenue. "It appears they did know each other," Chief Wells said. He stressed it was not a random act. The victim was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to a St. Louis area hospital. Detectives continued to investigate the stabbing late Monday night. No further details were released at this time.

GRANITE CITY - The Granite City Police Department reported that in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2024, they had a case of a vehicle fleeing from officers. The situation started when the Granite City Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle on Madison Avenue near 15 th Street in the city for a minor traffic violation. "The vehicle immediately began fleeing from officers and crossed the state line into Missouri," Granite City Police Major Gary Brooks said. "After a brief time in Missouri, the vehicle returned to Illinois where it became disabled and two subjects were taken into custody. Both subjects are in custody at the Granite City Police Department awaiting formal charges. " Brooks said there will be no further comment at this time on the case.

ALTON - Jarius Powers, a junior forward on the Alton High School girls basketball team, has played a key role in the renaissance of the Redbirds' program, and she has been a standout again in the 2023-2024 season. Jarius is an Auto Butler Female Athlete of the Month for the Redbirds. Powers was outstanding in the Morton Tournament with a 29-point outburst against Peoria Notre Dame in the semifinal contest. She had nine points in the first game of the tourney, 16 points in the second game, 29 in game three and 16 in the championship tilt. SPRINGFIELD - Illinois minimum wage workers are set to get another pay raise as the state’s minimum wage rises to $14 an hour effective Jan. 1, 2024. This comes as the latest pay increase in a series of raises set by Governor J.B. Pritzker with the goal of reaching a $15 minimum wage by 2025. “Since day one as Governor, I’ve made it my mission to put Springfield back on the side of working families,” Governor J.B. Pritzker said. “With this new minimum wage increase, we are once again making Illinois a more affordable and equitable place to live for all of our residents.” Standard minimum wage workers across the state will get an increase of $1 per hour from the current $13 to next year’s $14. JERSEYVILLE - The Jersey County Arts Council (JCAC) has had an incredible year over the course of 2023. From hosting several community art events to their involvement in many prominent art projects, the organization has even more plans in store for 2024.
