LOUIS COUNTY - On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on suspect Irasema Scott, 46 years of age, of the 4500 block of Whisper Lake Drive in St. Louis, Missouri 63033, for Domestic Assault First Degree. A booking photo of Scott is attached. Scott is being held on $150,000 cash only, no 10%, bond. Please note, charges are merely an accusation and Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law. Wood River Police Respond To Stabbing Report, Victim Transported To Hospital

WOOD RIVER – Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells confirmed Monday night, Jan. 1, 2024, that his department worked on a reported stabbing. The stabbing report came from the 300 block of Marquis Avenue. "It appears they did know each other," Chief Wells said. He stressed it was not a random act. The victim was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to a St. Louis area hospital. Detectives continued to investigate the stabbing late Monday night. No further details were released at this time.

Vehicle Flees From Officers, Granite City Police Eventually Take Two In Custody

GRANITE CITY - The Granite City Police Department reported that in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2024, they had a case of a vehicle fleeing from officers. The situation started when the Granite City Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle on Madison Avenue near 15 th Street in the city for a minor traffic violation. "The vehicle immediately began fleeing from officers and crossed the state line into Missouri," Granite City Police Major Gary Brooks said. "After a brief time in Missouri, the vehicle returned to Illinois where it became disabled and two subjects were taken into custody. Both subjects are in custody at the Granite City Police Department awaiting formal charges. " Brooks said there will be no further comment at this time on the case.

ALTON - Jarius Powers, a junior forward on the Alton High School girls basketball team, has played a key role in the renaissance of the Redbirds' program, and she has been a standout again in the 2023-2024 season. Jarius is an Auto Butler Female Athlete of the Month for the Redbirds. Powers was outstanding in the Morton Tournament with a 29-point outburst against Peoria Notre Dame in the semifinal contest. She had nine points in the first game of the tourney, 16 points in the second game, 29 in game three and 16 in the championship tilt. Alton defeated Batavia in the championship game of the Morton College Tournament. Powers and teammate Kiyoko Proctor were on the Morton Tournament All-Tourney Team. Illinois Minimum Wage Increases In 2024, Nearing $15/Hour

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois minimum wage workers are set to get another pay raise as the state’s minimum wage rises to $14 an hour effective Jan. 1, 2024. This comes as the latest pay increase in a series of raises set by Governor J.B. Pritzker with the goal of reaching a $15 minimum wage by 2025. “Since day one as Governor, I’ve made it my mission to put Springfield back on the side of working families,” Governor J.B. Pritzker said. “With this new minimum wage increase, we are once again making Illinois a more affordable and equitable place to live for all of our residents.” Standard minimum wage workers across the state will get an increase of $1 per hour from the current $13 to next year’s $14. Jersey County Arts Council Reflects On Successful 2023, Plans For 2024

JERSEYVILLE - The Jersey County Arts Council (JCAC) has had an incredible year over the course of 2023. From hosting several community art events to their involvement in many prominent art projects, the organization has even more plans in store for 2024. SPRINGFIELD - Unemployment rates around the Riverbend region remained close to a year ago in a November 2023 to November 2022 comparison. Madison County is at 3.8 percent in November 2023 compared to 3.4 percent in 2022, while Jersey is 3.4 percent compared to 3.1 percent a year ago, Macoupin is 3.7 percent compared to 3.4 percent a year ago. Calhoun is at 3.4 percent compared to 3.7 percent a year ago. The unemployment rate in the City of Alton in November was 5.2 percent vs. 4.9 percent a year ago. Edwardsville's rate was 2.8 percent compared to 2.8 percent a year ago and Granite City is at 4.2 percent compared to 3.4 percent a year ago. Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Aims to Raise Another $100,000 Before Jan. 31

ALTON - The red kettles might be packed away, but the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign will continue until Jan. 31, 2024, and they have another $100,000 to raise to meet their goal. “Now that the kettles have been put away and the ringers are kind of silent now, this might be the more important part of the journey just because…we’re not as visible,” said Mike Roberts, who co-chairs the campaign with his wife Karen. “This second half of the campaign is more important only just because the need isn’t changing. If anything, it’s still growing.” The local Red Kettle Campaign raises money to benefit the Alton Salvation Army, located at 525 Alby Street. As of Dec. 28, 2023, the campaign had collected a little over $116,500. They are hoping to reach their goal of $217,000 by the end of January.
