EDWARDSVILLE — A deployment of Madison County’s Cross-River Crime Task Force on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 7, resulted in the arrests of eight suspects on outstanding warrants. Those eight included one defendant who was wanted on a federal warrant for Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. During one of the warrant arrests, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was subsequently apprehended with the assistance of a police K9. “The enforcement of outstanding warrants is an important police function,” said Task Force Commander Marcos Pulido, who also is Chief Deputy at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. “For our communities to remain safe, it’s critical that wanted individuals be brought to justice.” The Cross-River Crime Task Force periodically conducts saturation patrols in areas, utilizing Task Force members from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. LOUIS — St. Louis area residents are invited to pay tribute to Veterans and military service members at the 41st Annual St. Louis Regional Veterans Day Observance on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, in Downtown St. Louis. The event includes a parade and a ceremony that honors the bravery and dedication of those who have served in the armed forces. The Veterans Day Parade will commence at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of 18th and Olive streets in St. Louis. This year’s grand marshal is Lieutenant General Jared Helwig, Deputy Director of the United States Transportation Command stationed at Scott Air Force Base. Helwig will deliver keynote remarks during a ceremony scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and will salute the military units participating in the parade as they pass by. EAST ALTON - Joshua Roe, a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force, served his country from 1998 to 2006, primarily as a firefighter at Malstrom Air Force Base. Originally from East Alton, Illinois, Roe's military career included deployments to Kuwait and Korea, as well as time spent at McChord Air Force Base. Roe's father, William L. Roe, submitted a message highlighting his son's service and dedication to the Air Force. The message reflects a sense of pride in Joshua Roe’s commitment, stating, "Our son served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Malstrom AFB, Kuwait, Korea, and McChord AFB." During his years of service, Roe achieved the rank of Senior Airman (E-4) but did not serve in combat. LOUIS — The East St. Louis School District 189 recognized the commitment of its students and their families during a recent event celebrating perfect attendance for the first quarter of the school year. Dunbar Elementary School in East St. Louis honored its scholars who maintained perfect attendance over the nine-week period. The celebration highlighted the dedication of both the students and their parents, with all scholars present at school every day, on time, and remaining for the full duration of each school day. In appreciation, the school held a raffle for the students and their parents, with prizes aimed at encouraging continued attendance. Two students were awarded bikes as part of the raffle for perfect attendance. The winners were identified as Keyounte Gibson from the third grade and Zyonna Wheaton from the second grade. ALTON - Ralph “Buzz” Ullrich has officially announced his campaign for Alton’s mayor. BELLEVILLE - The City of Belleville has expanded its ban on public camping, giving city officials more guidelines and authority as the issue of homelessness persists throughout the Riverbend. The Belleville City Code previously devoted a single paragraph to public camping, which has since been repealed and expanded. The updated 10-page ordinance deems the act a “nuisance within the city” in need of further regulation to address “public health concerns.” At their meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, the Belleville City Council voted 16-0 to pass the amended ordinance, which follows a similar structure to public camping bans passed in Alton , Wood River , Glen Carbon and more. The ordinance essentially defines “public camping” as establishing or remaining in a temporary living space where any material used for sleeping or cooking is present. This includes but is not limited to the use of sleeping bags, tents, vehicles, and more. It

She is an Altonized Community Federal Union Female Athlete of the Month for the Piasa Birds. Zurheide just completed a successful varsity volleyball season and is now poised to continue excelling in basketball in the winter and softball in the spring.
