ALTON - The 107th Alton Halloween Parade invites community members to enjoy another great year in downtown Alton. Starting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2024, the parade will travel down Broadway through downtown Alton to Piasa Street. Known as one of the oldest Halloween parades in the U.S., the parade’s organizers look forward to sharing it once again with the Riverbend community. “Since 1916, we’ve had this parade,” said Steve Schwartz, an organizer with the East End Improvement Association. “It’s gotten to be a community event. It’s fun to do. It’s expected within the community. It’s one of the best things that I’ve been involved in.” Schwartz and Greg Erler said that the East End Improvement Association has “a great committee” that organizes the parade every year. ALTON/GODFREY - Liz Campbell is the chair of this year's Community Christmas campaign and Margaret Freer, owner of Freer Auto Body and her company are again leading the charge for the upcoming Community Christmas campaign, which aims to support local families in need during the holiday season. "We need locations for boxes," Margaret Freer said. "They can email millie.bond@stlunitedway.org or call Freer Auto Body at 618-466-6151. Boxes will be distributed November 4 and 5 and will be picked back up December 4-5." This year, the event will take place with agencies shopping at Target on Nov. 12, 2024, and Nov. 13, 2024, funded by contributions from the community during the Christmas in July initiative. WOOD RIVER - Riverbend Family Ministries is gearing up for their busy season. During Wood River’s Downtown Trick-or-Treat event, Rachael Craddick stopped by “Our Daily Show!” to share information about the organization’s work and upcoming banquet. Craddick explained that Riverbend Family Ministries (RFM) helps many people in the community through their collaborative model. “November and December are typically our busiest months, so a lot of great things happening, a lot of people being helped and lives changed,” she said. “It’s been great. We’re able to help a lot of the community members that are coming in.” RFM works with families that are experiencing violence, substance use, homelessness, poverty and other crises. CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are seeking information about four masked suspects involved in armed robberies taking place at four jewelry stores across three states between July 13, 2023, and Sept. 14, 2024. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the FBI. The robberies in question have taken place at jewelry stores in Bridgeview, Illinois as well as in Michigan and Missouri. According to law enforcement, suspects alternately carried an AR-style rifle, handgun and hammer, and wore costume face masks. The FBI today released surveillance video footage of robberies that took place at stores in Bridgeview and Dearborn, Michigan. WOOD RIVER - Through Wood River’s Downtown Trick-or-Treat event last week, Wood River Main Street Executive Director Kristen Burns reflected on the event’s success. “We get such a great turnout,” Burns said. “The participation with the businesses, it’s top-notch. We’re so happy you’re here.” The event invites families and kids to trick-or-treat down the main streets of Wood River. Most of the businesses participated, giving out candy and decorating their storefronts. Burns warned that they “absolutely” did not have enough candy for all of the community members who came out on Oct. 23, 2024, but she was still excited to see so many people in downtown Wood River. EDWARDSVILLE - SIUE hosted its Day of the Dead celebration to honor Mexican culture. Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is an annual tradition at SIUE’s Lovejoy Library. On Oct. 29, 2024, students could enjoy dance and music performances, vendors, food and more. “It’s important for me just to get students engaged,” said organizer Simone Williams. “We do this every year, and it normally has a good turnout.” Though some of the students can be “shy” about joining in on the celebration, others participated throughout the day by singing, dancing, getting their faces painted and more. ALTON - The 18th Domestic Violence Memorial Service honored two Madison County residents who were lost to domestic violence this year. Roadecker “Roe” Watts and Amy Lynn Delacruz were remembered during the memorial service on Oct. 29, 2024. The service also recognized the 49,651 Illinois residents who received direct domestic violence client services between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024. “We’re here to remember those who have lost their lives here in Madison County over the last year,” said Pastor Jim Johnston. “What happens to them happens to us. ALTON - A man from Alton faces multiple felonies after allegedly battering a victim and stealing their car in a Godfrey parking lot. Forrest S. Bayer, 28, of Alton, was charged with vehicular hijacking (a Class 1 felony), offenses related to motor vehicles (a Class 2 felony), and aggravated battery (a Class 3 felony). On Oct. 10, 2024, Bayer allegedly punched a victim multiple times in the face before stealing the same victim’s car and fleeing the scene. The incident unfolded shortly before Madison County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a stolen vehicle report, according to a petition to deny Bayer’s pretrial release. The victim advised officers she had dropped Bayer off at the Godfrey Walmart, but noticed her phone was missing after she left. GODFREY - Illinois Central School Bus gave away $1,500 worth of candy at their annual Bus ‘R’ Treat event. From 5:30–7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, kids were invited to the Illinois Central School Bus lot at 4525 N. Alby in Godfrey for drive-thru trick-or-treating. School bus drivers and monitors decorated their buses and dressed up in costume to hand out candy. “It’s a lot of fun.
