Madison County Is Seeking Public's Help In Preserving History Related To COVID Pandemic

EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County is asking people to donate materials, or tell their stories, related to the coronavirus pandemic, as a way to preserve this moment in history. Director of the Madison County Historical Museum Jon Parkin said that an historic event is taking place all around us right now, and he is asking people to share their stories, so it will be preserved for future generations. The museum is also looking for objects, and paper or digital items, that document the current crisis. “We want to include the heroic efforts of first responders, the plight of victims, the effects on businesses, schools, and cultural groups; and the creativity borne of isolation,” Parkin said. The museum will collect paper memorabilia, like flyers, postcards, signs, emails, drawings, or anything that shows how county residents are handling the current situation. CHICAGO – Three Illinois Lottery players tried their luck with a $10 scratch-off ticket and wound up in the lottery winner’s circle - each scoring a $250,000 top-prize win. Intruder Arrested Twice Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at RFK, Jr.'s Home

LOS ANGELES, CA. — On Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, an intruder was arrested after climbing a fence at the residence of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Protectors from Gavin de Becker & Associates (GDBA) detected and detained the intruder, who asked to see the candidate. The intruder was turned over to the LAPD. After being released from police custody, the man immediately returned to Kennedy's residence and was arrested again. The candidate was home at the time of both arrests. GDBA had notified the Secret Service about this specific obsessed individual several times in recent months and shared alarming communications he had sent to the candidate. New Alby Street Stop Signs, More Approved By Alton City Council

ALTON - The Alton City Council gave their final approval to several items passed by the Committee of the Whole earlier this week, including new stop signs and other traffic safety improvements on Alby Street, property bids and demolitions, and more. The council unanimously gave final approval to an ordinance placing stop signs on northbound and southbound Alby Street at East 20th Street. According to the ordinance, the intersection at Alby and East 20th Street will be converted from a two-way stop with a blinking yellow light overhead to a four-way stop with a blinking red light overhead. The intersection will also feature LED lights illuminating the stop signs and painted stop lines on the roadway. While the City Council passed the ordinance without debate on Wednesday, the item was the subject of some discussion during the Committee of the Whole meeting earlier this week. Alton Circle Plaza Given Final Approval By Alton City Council

ALTON - The Alton City Council voted 6-1 to officially approve an $8.1 million redevelopment agreement for the new Route 3 and Buckmaster Business District, also known as Alton Circle Plaza, which was passed by the Committee of the Whole earlier this week . The redevelopment agreement has been made between the City of Alton and Missouri-based Valcour Development Company. The total cost, which the city has agreed to reimburse up to half of, covers several interior and exterior renovation projects around the newly established Route 3 and Buckmaster Business District, which roughly covers the area encompassing Big Lots, Goodwill, and other stores, but excludes the new Starbucks location. The city plans to reimburse Valcour through new sales tax revenue generated by a 1% sales tax increase on most retail items sold within the newly established district. Weather Predictions Show Cooler Temps For Halloween

ALTON - Halloween is almost here and with it comes an abundance of trick-or-treating, parades and fun outside. This Halloween is going to be much cooler than normal around the region. Ben Herzog, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in St. Louis, said temps on Halloween night and the night before will likely be in the lower to mid-30s. The projection by the NWS is a high of 45 and a low of around 29 on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, and a high of 46 and low of around 27 degrees on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, Halloween night. “Temperatures are going to drop well before next week,” Herzog said. “We have a cold front that will come through on Friday. We will have pretty warm temperatures during the day on Friday, but by Friday night, temps in the St. Louis area are going to fall into the mid and upper 40s.” Herzog predicted on Halloween night temps would be around the mid-30s, but he said people would be fine if they dressed in layers for the night's fun activities.

EAST ALTON/WOOD RIVER - Woodrow Peterson and his group the Backpack Bandits have been busy recently with a massive Community Cleanup in October. Peterson also saw a request from the Madison Police Department when they didn’t have any additional NARCAN for patrol officers and he helped fulfill that urgent need with a donation of 20 cases. NARCAN is a nasal spray designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency. Alton Mayor David Goins and First Lady Sheila Goins met with Overnight Warming Center organizers at Deliverance Temple Church of God in Christ in Alton . State Police To Conduct Nighttime Enforcement Patrols

COLLINSVILLE – Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 8 Commander, Captain Casey Faro, announces the ISP will conduct Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrols in Madison and St. Clair County during November. NITE patrols allow the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to impaired driving and occupant restraint violations especially between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The number of unrestrained drivers killed in traffic crashes is significantly higher at nighttime and combined with impaired driving means even more traffic deaths during these critical hours. Officers will strictly enforce violations including: - Driving Under the Influence (DUI); - Safety Belt and Child Restraint use; - Speeding; - Distracted Driving; and, - All Illinois Vehicle Code and Criminal Violations. Alcohol and drug impairment are factors in more than 30% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Over half of all fatal crashes in Illinois occur at night.

IDNR Monitoring For Outbreaks Of Avian Influenza

SPRINGFIELD – With the regular waterfowl seasons about to open this fall, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to be aware that they could encounter highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, again this year. IDNR will monitor for outbreaks of HPAI during the fall bird migration. Members of the public are encouraged to report large concentrations of 20 or more deceased birds found one location. Reports can be made to the local IDNR district wildlife biologist . IDNR first announced HPAI was detected in wild Canada geese in Illinois in March 2022 in a joint notice with the Illinois Department of Agriculture. IDNR reminds waterfowl hunters to take precautions by thoroughly cooking game meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Hunters also should avoid handling sick or dead waterfowl found in the field, and they should not allow dogs or other pets to consume waterfowl that died from unknown causes. GLEN CARBON - Glen Carbon Code Enforcement Officer Brian Hunt recently gave a presentation to village trustees updating them on various properties around the village, most of which have become code compliant, aside from two problem properties. Hunt said so far, there have been 120 code enforcement citations issued in 2023. Most of these were issued for either junk storage, overgrown brush, parking in yards, and inoperable vehicles. Fines were collected on about 20 of those citations, and Hunt said the majority of them have since become compliant, either before or after going to court. GLEN CARBON - Jeff Garde and his family have once again constructed a memorable, family-friendly Halloween display at 54 Oakshire Drive in the Fairfield Subdivision of Glen Carbon. Garde said this marks the 11th consecutive year for the family Halloween display at their home. The home is located near Father McGivney Catholic High School. "Each year, we like to invite all families as we give out candy the night of October 30," Garde added. "Last year, we had over 300 visitors." Last year's special display was a spider display that attracted hundreds during the Halloween season. In 2023, the Garde family decided to construct the display with a Haunted Daycare theme. Jeff's family assists him with the project each year. He said before that the family asks people what their biggest fears are every year and somehow they formulate a plan for the display. MARYVILLE - The Anderson Hospital Foundation 12 th Annual Sporting Clay Classic was held on October 7, 2023, at 1 NILO Farms in Brighton Illinois. The event featured 100 targets and 12 stations, the event also included a large BBQ buffet for the shooters. Anderson Hospital Development Director Lori St. John said: "We had 184 shooters, which was a record amount, that came out on a beautiful fall day to enjoy this event. We thank the Sporting Clay Committee who worked hard to make this event a success and the 33 sponsors that donated to this event and who continue to support us each year." The event raised over $54,500. The Foundation allocates funds for capital projects and programs in support of Anderson Hospital."
