ROXANA - Evan Wells, a senior-to-be running back for Roxana High's Football Team, will be a key contributor this coming season as the Shells look to go farther in the IHSA playoffs. Wells is a Midwest Members Credit Union Male Athlete of the Month for the Shells. The Shells went 7-4 this past season and qualified for the Class 3A playoffs, defeating Hillsboro in the first round before falling in the second round to Fairbury Prairie Central. Wells ran for 874 yards and 10 touchdowns, breaking into triple figures four times in the season, and also caught 10 passes for 115 yards and another touchdown in helping the Shells to their successful season. SOUTHERN ILLINOIS - Everybody has a favorite Girl Scouts cookie flavor, but most people don’t know the scope of what the Girl Scouts organization does or how it can affect the lives of local young women. Loretta Graham, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, is hoping to change that. “We are investing in our future and in our world by investing in our girls,” Graham said. “When people think about Girl Scouts, they say, ‘Cookies, camping, crafts! That’s Girl Scouting.’ Well, there’s more. Building girls of courage, confidence, and character, that’s going to make our world a better place. And these girls, some of the projects that they have done in these communities, they’re not only going to lead our world. EDWARDSVILLE - Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine announced he has charged a 32-year-old man with felony sexual exploitation of a child and disorderly conduct in connection with the man’s actions at a water park. The charges filed Friday by Haine’s office allege that, on Thursday, July 6, 2023, Chad A. Green engaged in an act of masturbation while in the presence of children at Collinsville Aqua Park. Bail for Green, a resident of Madison, was set at $50,000 by Associate Judge Ryan Jumper. Green remained in custody as of Friday afternoon. The judge also granted a prosecution request that, in the event, Green is released on bond, Green is prohibited from having contact with anyone younger than 18. Collinsville Police Department is conducting the investigation. The case is assigned to Assistant State’s Attorney Ali Foley, head of the Children’s Justice Division. WEST ALTON - Bald Eagle 23-126 had over 100 people cheering him on as he was released into the wild at the Audubon Center at Riverlands on Friday, July 7. The World Bird Sanctuary (WBS) rehabilitated 126 over the past few months, with thousands of people following his story online. WBS worked with the Audubon Center to release him in an area where he will have access to plenty of food and perches as he acclimates to his new life. “There is never a day that we do this that it’s not just amazing,” Ryan Vinyard, who works with WBS, said. “The work that led up to this, every part of it, has been great.” Bald Eagle 23-126 was blown out of his nest during a storm earlier this spring. WBS has been caring for the orphaned bird since then. In the past several weeks, 126 has practiced scavenging, hunting and flying at the WBS facility in Valley Park, MO. MEDORA - When Gabrielle McQuay decided to complete a Gold Project to round out her years as a Girl Scout, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She decided to create the reading garden that late Southwestern teacher Lori Schultz had always wanted to see. “It was in my mind ever since she died,” Gabrielle said. “She always talked about it. She was really excited to get one and kept trying to convince them.” Gabrielle has fond memories of Schultz and Medora Elementary School (now Medora Intermediate School). Schultz, a Jerseyville native, spent 14 years as a teacher in the Southwestern School District. She passed away in 2015 at age 37 after battling brain cancer for nine months. Gabrielle was a student in the last third-grade class she ever taught. Now as a 2023 Southwestern High School graduate, Gabrielle is paying back some of the love that Schultz showed her students. ALTON - A GoFundMe has been organized for an area family who lost their home and all furnishings. On July 4, 2023, Jimmy, Cristina and their two young boys, Niko and Gus, lost their home and all of their belongings when a fire raged through their house. They were celebrating the holiday when they got the call to immediately return home. Upon arrival, they found it was too late to salvage anything as first responders battled to put the fire out and get it contained. It was a complete loss. ALTON - At 2:49 p.m. on July 7, 2023, the Alton Police Department was contacted by a local business that has recently been the victim of several felony thefts. The business employee requested officer assistance in retrieving the stolen property. Alton Police Chief Ford said Alton Police Officers and detectives agreed to assist in the recovery of the stolen property. In doing so, they observed the theft suspect with stolen property in the 2300 block of State Street, Alton. As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect was able to flee the area in a vehicle. The suspect then refused to pull over and instead fled in an attempt to elude officers. "A pursuit ensued with officers successfully deploying stop sticks to disable the vehicle," Chief Ford said. "The vehicle came to a stop just across the Clark Bridge in Missouri. Letter To The Editor: Over the past few years, Wood River City Council meetings have been contentious. However, the last two meetings have devolved with threats to the council and comments, some of which are from non-Wood River residents, that are nothing more than personal smear attacks intended to tarnish council members including negative comments about their immediate family members. EAST ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Federal Court in St. Louis announced today that Jeremy P. Devaisher, 42, of Brighton, was sentenced to 130 months in prison for methamphetamine-related charges on Thursday, July 6, 2023. He was fined $200 and must also pay $100 in special assessments. Following his release from federal prison, Devaisher must complete five years of supervised release.
