CHICAGO – A life-changing amount of cash is up for grabs tomorrow night as the Powerball jackpot soars to an eye-watering $700 million. If a player wins Saturday’s jackpot, it would be the sixth-largest Powerball jackpot and the 10th-largest U.S. lottery jackpot won in history. PONTOON BEACH - A press conference was held on Thursday afternoon at the Pontoon Beach Police Department and charges were announced against a man currently incarcerated on another offense - Roger Dale Sutton Jr., 55, formerly of Pontoon Beach. Sutton is charged with two counts of first-degree murder of Patrenia Butler-Turner, missing since December 2013. Patrenia was 40 years old at the time she disappeared from East St. Louis in 2013. Also charged is Sutton’s nephew, Nathan J. Beyer, for concealing Trina’s body. Sutton is presently serving a two-year sentence on felony meth possession. He is incarcerated at the Centralia Correctional Center in Illinois and would have been eligible for parole in two weeks. Sutton is also charged in this case with one count of concealment of a homicidal death. In addition, a nephew, Nathan J. Beyer, 32, of Alton, has been charged with one count of concealment of a homicidal death, for allegedly concealing the woman’s body in a woode

FULTON, MO. - Kaleb Hinkle-Pruett from East Alton, IL, was named to the Fall 2022 Dean's List for exemplary academic performance at Westminster College. Hinkle-Pruett is a Sophomore at Westminster. GODFREY – In recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in the lead-up to Black History Month, Lewis and Clark Community College held a celebration Jan. 26, featuring keynote speaker Rev. Shelia Goins. Goins, who spoke to the group about the importance of financial literacy, is a retired bank manager and was the first African American woman to be hired as a branch manager in the Riverbend area. Among Goins’ accomplishments, she has served on the Alton Parks and Recreation Board of Directors, St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundations Board, Arms of Love/Options Now board chair, and Riverbend Growth Association ambassador, where she was named Ambassador of the Year in 2012 and 2013. ALTON - Air Force Veteran Brendan Henrion and his wife, Tiffany, are planning to bring a Vietnam Memorial Wall to Alton with a project named “Remembering Vietnam.” After meeting with Alton Mayor David Goins, they’re now in the process of raising donations and finding a location for the wall. Henrion served for four years in the Air Force and said the inspiration for the wall came from Tiffany’s grandfather, a Vietnam veteran named Edward Buckshot. “My wife’s grandfather is a marine, he served two tours in Vietnam … years ago, he came up with the origins of the whole project dedicating a memorial wall for Vietnam,” Brendan said. “He experienced that when everybody came home, they had all been drafted to go serve, then they all came home and they got spat on and not really welcomed with open arms. CARLINVILLE - On Thursday, Carlinville High School captured first in the 700 division of the Academic Challenge (ACES) Regional Competition. The event was co-hosted by CHS and Blackburn College. The 700 division consists of schools with enrollment between 300 and 700 students. Roxana finished in second place, and East Alton-Wood River finished in third place. EDWARDSVILLE - The Edwardsville Rotary Club has chosen to honor Edwardsville High School student Brooke Young with the Student of the Month Award for the month of January. Brooke Young was nominated by Honors Chemistry teacher Melissa Barnett at Edwardsville High School. Brooke is the daughter of Stephanie and Edward Young and is an exemplary student at Edwardsville High. Brooke is an Illinois State Scholar and a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Honor Society. Brooke has a passion for science and hopes to continue pursuing a career in STEM by going to college for a major in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. GODFREY - Great-horned owls and barred owls are the two common owls in Illinois. During the winter these owls build nests, find mates, and defend their territory. Since owls are active and vocal when defending their territories, it gives us a chance to consistently hear them in the wild. The Nature Institute will host two Owl Prowl events to give the public a chance to learn more about owls and hear them in the preserve. Treehouse Wildlife Center will bring several owl species to The Nature Institute on two occasions this winter. The Valentine’s Day Owl Prowl on February 14 is designed for adults. This program will be a unique event with learning, appetizers, and wine for groups of friends and couples to enjoy together. The Treehouse program will start indoors with the live owls and snacks, then we will head outside to call and listen for wild owls.
