GLEN CARBON - Senior Claire Stanhaus has emerged as a leader of the Father McGivney Griffins girls' basketball team this season at her point guard position. Stanhaus is a Byron, Carlson, Petri, and Kalp LLC Female Athlete of the Month for McGivney. Claire had breakout games against Maryville Christian with 12 points on Dec. 15, 2022, 10 points against Metro East Lutheran on Jan. 12, and nine points on Dec. 27, 2022, against Elkville Elverado. She had nine assists in the MELHS game, seven against Staunton on Dec. 30, 2022, and six against Greenville on Nov. 15, 2022. She had four steals against Christ Our Rock on Dec. 1, 2022. The senior is also a soccer standout. "Claire is a leader of our team as a point guard," said McGivney had girls coach Jeff Oller. "She is leading the team in assists with 53 on the season and also has 31 steals," the coach added. "She does a lot of things that may go unnoticed that help the team be successful."

JERSEYVILLE - An Elsah man has been charged with criminal damage to property in connection to an attempted catalytic converter theft, while a Carrollton man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on State St. in Jerseyville. Kerry J. Dooley, 32, of Elsah, attempted to steal the catalytic converter from a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado which was located at the Piasa Harbor Boat Ramp on State Highway 100 in Jersey County on Jan. 25. He caused over $500 in damages to the vehicle’s exhaust system and was charged with a Class 4 felony. A warrant was filed for Dooley’s arrest on Jan. 26 and his bail was set at $15,000. ALTON - A vehicle overturned after a single-vehicle accident around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday in the 4500 block of Alby Street in Alton. Two electric poles were broken in the crash. Crews worked into the night and power was disrupted to only one customer until approximately 2 a.m. Monday. "The vehicle was headed northbound on Alby and because of the ice was involved in a rollover accident that ended on its side," Alton Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fischer said. "The person had a sunroof and was able to extricate himself. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries."

ALTON - The Riverbend CEO program, which teaches local high school students how to start their own businesses, has been off to a successful seventh year so far in 2023. Program Facilitator Katie Sabolo appeared on a recent episode of Our Daily Show! on Riverbender.com to discuss the program, and some of the students talked about their experiences and businesses. “We’re having a really great year,” Sabolo said. “We’re getting into a lot of different businesses, meeting with a lot of different business owners, and the kids are really making great progress both on their class business and on their individual businesses.” The year-long, two-credit high school course doesn’t meet in a traditional classroom - instead, it meets at local businesses for 90 minutes each day for a school year. JERSEY COUNTY - Jersey County Sheriff Nick Manns has announced the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) wants the residents it serves to know that during the course of this year, it will be testing a new community zone patrol concept. Splitting the county into four separate patrol zones, two Deputies (one day shift and one night shift) will be assigned to each zone. "Those Deputies will be going door to door in their assigned zone to introduce themselves, meet those residents who are willing, and listen to any of their concerns, wants, and/or needs," Sheriff Manns said. EAST ST. LOUIS – A U.S. District Court judge sentenced Kristin P. Prince, 41, of Mesa, Arizona, to 168 months in prison for the distribution of methamphetamine. He was fined $300 and $200 in special assessments. Following his release from federal prison, Prince must complete five years of supervised release. According to court documents, the offenses occurred in January and February 2021, just months after Prince was released from state prison for convictions of identity theft and felony Aggravated DUI. “This sentence demonstrates the severity of consequences for out-of-state individuals who infect our communities with methamphetamines,” said U.S. Attorney Rachelle Aud Crowe. “I applaud the efforts by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to disrupt the illegal chain of drug distribution into southern Illinois.” Prince was still being supervised by the State of Arizona when he was caught distributing large quantities

LOUIS COUNTY - St. Louis County Police reported that on Saturday, January 28, 2023, suspect Julian Jones turned himself in at the St. Louis County Justice and was taken into custody without incident. On Friday, January 20, 2023, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued “At Large” charges on suspect Julian Jones Sr., 48 years of age, of the 2400 block of Princess Drive in St. Louis, Missouri 63136, for Statutory Rape Second Degree. CHICAGO – Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced his office obtained a four-year prison sentence in a case involving a Perry County man who sexually assaulted an individual with an intellectual disability. Larry Vancil, 74, of Du Quoin, Illinois, was sentenced by Perry County Circuit Court Judge James W. Campanella on Wednesday after pleading guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony. “Instead of ensuring a safe environment for some of our most vulnerable residents, the defendant chose to instead violate the rights of an individual that did not have the capacity to speak up and protect themselves,” Raoul said. “I am committed to holding individuals accountable for taking advantage of people they are responsible for protecting.” According to Raoul, Vancil was employed as a bus driver for the South Central Illinois Mass Transit District (SCT). EDWARDSVILLE - Senior forward Olivia Durbin is one of the keys to the Civic Memorial girls' basketball team that hasn't had the best o seasons, going to 13-14 with a loss at Edwardsville 42-34 on Jan. 28. Durbin has been one of the leaders of a team that in 2021-22 finished fourth in the IHSA Class 3A state finals at Champaign-Urbana. This season, Durbin had been the leader for CM's girls in scoring, averaging 14.6 points-per-game, along with averaging 1.7 rebounds per game to go along with 30 assists and 11 steals, and continues to work hard on the court to help the Eagles.
