SWANSEA - State Senator Christopher Belt joined the Office of the State Fire Marshal in announcing applications are now being accepted for the Small Equipment Grant Program. “With support from Small Equipment grants, our first responders are able to operate more smoothly and have access to the resources they need,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “When we invest in our first responders and their work, we’re investing in the public safety of our communities too.” The Small Equipment Grant Program assists fire departments and not-for-profit ambulance services in Illinois, particularly those experiencing difficulty in generating the necessary revenue for small equipment. The grants allow eligible applicants the opportunity to purchase small tools and equipment they may otherwise not be able to afford. GODFREY - Lewis and Clark Community College is meeting the changes and challenges in the growing real estate field by offering classes to help individuals enter that career field as brokers. An individual must pass a total of 75 hours of instruction to take the Real Estate Broker’s licensure exam. EAST ALTON — The Annual Madison County Illinois Scanner Page Food Drive is now underway, with donations being collected until Aug. 31, 2024, at various locations throughout the county. This community initiative, spearheaded by Chris Rhodes, a correspondent for Riverbender.com, aims to gather non-perishable food and personal hygiene items for distribution to local food pantries. Chris Rhodes, who founded the Madison County Scanner Page in 2015, shared that this year's food drive holds special significance. "This year’s food drive is in memory of my dad Mike Rhodes, who passed a year ago this Friday," Rhodes said. "He was a big supporter of the food drive every year. He helped drop off boxes and helped collect food over the years I've been doing it. Last year in the middle of the food drive he passed away." Chris' mom, Karen, and grandfather, Gene, have assisted for multiple years in the program and he said he greatly appreciates their help. Rhodes has placed 33 donation

The package of bills signed includes HB581, which ensures that pregnant women can access needed emergency medical care, HB5239, which expands Illinois’ shield laws, and HB4867, which clarifies and expands the Illinois Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on reproductive health decisions. “It is no longer enough to legislate for the current moment. ALTON - Foster’s Light in the Dark , a new nonprofit in the Riverbend region, will host an Overdose Awareness Day event. From 6–8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at Russell Commons Park in Alton, community members can learn about substance use resources and honor those who have been lost. Attendees will light candles for their loved ones, share local resources and learn more about Foster’s Light in the Dark. “Our community needs this. We need this,” said Christina Foster Beegle, founder of Foster’s Light in the Dark. Beegle started the organization to remember people who have been lost to drug overdose or suicide. She is open about her own history of substance use and the loss of her three brothers to suicide. The nonprofit aims to eventually build a memorial park in Alton that provides a space for community members to honor their loved ones.
