EDWARDSVILLE - Elise Thompson, a junior for the Father McGivney Catholic girls swimming team, had a breakthrough performance for herself and the Griffins at the IHSA sectional meet on Nov. 9, 2024, at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center in Edwardsville.Thompson was a part of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished sixth in 2:15.37. earning a medal, and also was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:11.51. She also had a time of 2:28.37 in the 200-yard individual medley and was the anchor for the 200-yard freestyle relay team that came in at 2:00.70, all excellent efforts. In a post-meet interview, Thompson felt she swam well, and was very proud of her two medal-winning performances. "Personally, I think I did very well," Thompson said. "The relay I was part of took sixth place, and individually, in the 100 breaststroke, I took fifth place. So, I think I did pretty well, personally." Auto Butler Female Athlete Of Month: Redbirds' Ella Valyo Enjoys Success In IHSA Sectional Meet

EDWARDSVILLE - Alton's Ella Valyo had a very good showing in her events at the girls sectional swim meet, held on Nov. 9 at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center at Edwardsville High School. Valyo was a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that had a time of 2:15.81, came in the 109-yard backstroke at 1:19.6, and was also a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that came in at 5:15.64. Ella is an Auto Butler Female Athlete of the Month for the Redbirds. It was indeed a good showing for Valyo and the Redbirds, and she thought she had a good performance, despite not having swam for some time. "I thought it went well," Valyo said in an interview conducted shortly after one of her heats. "Not too bad, for not having swam for a little bit." Valyo also felt that her teammates also swam well, went out, and did their best Valyo also had a very simple goal going into the sectional. "Just to swim my hardest," Valyo said. Stillwater Senior Living Female Athlete Of Month: Warriors' Megan Sykes Enjoys Successful IHSA Sectional Swim Meet

EDWARDSVILLE - Megan Sykes, who competed on the Granite City High girls swimming team this fall, enjoyed a successful IHSA sectional meet on Nov. 9, 2024, at Edwardsville's Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center. Sykes had a 100-yard freestyle time of 1:11.35, was a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that came in at 2:04.80, and had a time in the 100-yard breaststroke of 1:45.65 to complete her program on the day. Megan is a Stillwater Senior Living Female Athlete of the Month. In her post-meet interview, Sykes felt she and her teammates swam well on the day, and was happy with her performances "I feel pretty good about how I did," Sykes said, "as my own person and our team. I think we did pretty good." Sykes felt that she had a good meet as well, personally. "I think we had a good meet," Sykes said. "We did our best." Sykes is best known for being a basketball player for the Warriors but enjoys swimming very much. "I enjoy it a lot," Sykes said. "It's fun, and it's a good workout."

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)—a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC)—along with U.S. Representatives Terri Sewell (D-AL-07) and Andy Kim (D-NJ-03) introduced the Improving Access to Prenatal Care for Military Families Act . The legislation would create a Department of Defense (DoD) pilot program to designate pregnancy as a Qualifying Life Event under the TRICARE program, empowering servicemembers and their spouses to choose a health care plan that meets their needs during pregnancy. This legislation builds on Senator Duckworth’s, Congressman Kim’s and Congresswoman Sewell’s bicameral efforts to include a version of this bill in the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Civic Memorial Medical Careers Classes to Host Fundraiser for Medical Supplies

BETHALTO/COTTAGE HILLS - The Medical Careers classes at Civic Memorial High School will host a fundraiser to buy medical training supplies. Taught by Angie Parish, Medical Careers 1 and 2 cover basic medical skills and encourage students to pursue medical careers after graduation. On Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, the classes will host a virtual golf outing at Grip & Sip in Cottage Hills. All proceeds go toward the classes to buy supplies. “I’m just giving them an opportunity, and the kids are running with it,” Parish said. “They just need that opportunity out there. The community support is absolutely amazing, and I can’t thank the community enough for what they’re doing for us.” Golfing starts at 10 a.m. on Dec. 14. It costs $100 for a two-person team and nine holes of golf. For $10, attendees can also enjoy a putting contest and a chipping contest, where the winners get half of the pot. Margin on Missouri sports betting amendment narrows as counties tally official results
