Edwardsville Fire Department Fills New Assistant Chief Role as Three Are Promoted

EDWARDSVILLE – Three Edwardsville Fire Department members moved up the ladder this week as the department expanded its ranks to include an assistant fire chief. The three veteran firefighter/paramedics took the oath of office for their new rank at the Tuesday, October 17, City Council meeting. Capt. Bob Morgan, who has been with the Edwardsville Fire Department for 27 and a half years, was promoted to the assistant fire chief position, which was created in September to officially provide the department with a fire marshal. Chief James Whiteford said Morgan has already been functioning as a fire marshal, handling many fire prevention and construction inspections. In the position, Morgan also will assist with training and education, overall management and be available for emergency response. Lt. Ed Burnley was promoted to the rank of captain, filling the role that Morgan previously held. Burnley, who has been with the department for 11 years, oversees technical rescue training

Several Facing Theft, Property Damage Charges In Greene County

CARROLLTON - Property-related criminal charges ranging from theft to criminal property damage and more have been filed against several individuals over the past few weeks, according to the latest jail booking report from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. Brandon L. Capps, 36, of Jacksonville, was charged with one count each of arson and criminal damage to property by means of fire. Capps was arrested on Oct. 6, 2023 by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and remains in custody. Erin L. Settles, 39, of Kane, was charged with residential burglary and theft of an amount between $300 to $10,000. She was arrested by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 15, 2023 and was given a Notice To Appear in court. John J. Scheferkort, 31, of Roodhouse, was charged with criminal damage to property and violation of bail bond. IDOT Announces Lane Restrictions on Interstates 55/70 Between Illinois Route 203 and MLK Bridge

EAST ST. LOUIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced current lane restrictions will be extended, weather permitting, on westbound Interstates 55/70 between IL Route 203 and the MLK Bridge ramp, in St. Clair County, continuing at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23 through 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. The westbound outside right lane will be closed continuously during this time. Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day, an additional westbound lane will also be closed. All entrance and exit ramps will remain open. These restrictions are needed to complete pavement repair work. IDOT District 8 Operations will make the needed improvements. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Marquette Students Participate In Youth Leadership Conference

ALTON - Marquette Catholic High School students participated in the recent Youth Leadership Conference held at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville coordinated by Sen. Eric Harriss. The students were Jacob Rose, Marissa Statos, and Alicia McCulley along with AP Government Teacher Beth DeCourcey. The students are shown here with Sen. Harriss. Marquette Principal Tim Harmon said: "Through this experience, our students were able to discuss and propose policy ideas important to their generation. "The conference provided insight into how state government works, tools to achieve career success, and opportunities to work in small groups to develop potential legislation for consideration by the Illinois General Assembly."

ALTON - If you love the spooky, the weird and the completely genuine, stop by Milton Schoolhouse this month to check out Artist of the Month Chelsea Masiero’s work. “I’m obsessed with the Piasa Bird,” Masiero said as we studied one of her favorite pieces: the Piasa Bird, with a septum piercing and barbed wire wrapped around its antlers. “Biggest inspiration, for sure.” This is the borderline Masiero walks as an artist. She’s completely sincere, and she also knows it’s funny. Her art hums with this self-awareness, even down to the brand she’s created. “Sh*tty Art By Sh*tty People,” or SABSP, is the name she uses for her t-shirt sales, and she especially likes the SABSP abbreviation because she was once “a big Pabst drinker.” Masiero was an easy pick for the October Milton Artist of the Month, as many of her drawings veer toward the macabre.
