Each year, more celebrations crop up around Juneteenth, which celebrates when Gordon Granger, a Union general, told the enslaved African-Americans of Galveston, Texas, that they were free on June 19, 1865. This was about two months after the Civil War ended. The holiday now has come to encapsulate Black liberation and is a federal holiday.

Bethalto Residents Have Choice Between New Energy Rates

2 years 6 months ago
BETHALTO - The Village of Bethalto is advising residents to consider remaining part of its energy aggregation program despite Ameren currently having a lower market rate. The energy aggregation program is meant to protect residents from market volatility by charging a fixed rate regardless of the market through 2024 - but if residents wish to opt-out and switch to Ameren, the village has also outlined the steps to do so. The new Ameren rate is $0.08162 compared to Bethalto’s program rate of $0.1220. Ameren’s new rate went into effect on June 1, and the aggregation program’s fixed rate will expire in December 2024. According to a press release from the village, “Residents need to understand the newly filed Ameren rate can return to an upward swing anytime during that period … The Village’s Program has been very successful since its inception in 2012.” Also noted in the press release were the savings from the previous round of the aggregation

St. Louis Pizza Passport Is Officially Live

2 years 6 months ago
There might be other pizza towns — New York and Chicago can do their own thing — but it's hard to say there's a better pizza town than St. Louis. Even if you're not a fan of the divisive Provel cheese, you still have a plethora of pizza options that range from no-Provel St. Louis-style pie to charred and chewy Neapolitan-style fare. The St. Louis pizza passport is the natural outgrowth of all that.

Music Publishers File (Somewhat Weak) Copyright Lawsuit Against Twitter

2 years 6 months ago
To be honest, I’m somewhat amazed that more copyright lawsuits haven’t been filed against Twitter yet. There have been multiple reports of how the company’s DMCA takedown response systems have been broken/ignored since Musk took over. Without looking for it, I’ve seen full length high def movies show up in my Twitter feed (including movies […]

New Belt-Supported Law Prevents Utility Shutoffs In Extreme Heat

2 years 6 months ago
SPRINGFIELD — Residents struggling to pay their gas or electric bills will not face life-threatening utility shutoffs on hot days thanks to an initiative supported by State Christopher Belt that was signed into law last Friday. “This measure recognizes the urgent need to safeguard vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children and individuals with health conditions,” said Belt. “There are many risks associated with extreme heat, and this aims to mitigate them, as well as prevent potential health and safety hazards.” The new law prohibits a utility company from terminating gas or electric service due to nonpayment of bills on days when the forecasted temperature is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or above, or when the National Weather Service issues a heat watch, advisory or warning for the location of the residence. Previously, disconnections were prohibited during temperatures 95 degrees or hotter and did not take into account humidity or heat index.

2 years 6 months ago
DIXMOOR, Ill. - In case you missed it, Congresswoman Kelly was joined by Congressman Jonathan Jackson, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Village of Dixmoor to break ground on a new water main project. Largely supported by federal funds secured, in-part by Rep. Kelly, Dixmoor’s new water main would preserve and protect the village’s critical water supply. Dixmoor’s water main infrastructure project is planned to build a 3,700 ft 12-inch water main, which would stretch from Seeley Avenue, cross south under the I-57 overpass, and east onto 13th St. in Dixmoor. The project would also cap five other water mains in the area to help prevent future water main breaks. Congresswoman Kelly celebrated the over $2M she helped secure for the project, which included funds from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the most significant commitment to public infrastructure the United States has made in decades. “These investments ar
