ALTON - The Alton Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. will host its biennial cotillion on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 5:00 PM at the Premier Best Western Hotel in Alton, IL. This year's theme, “Jewels of Distinction,” embodies all the 2022 debutantes. The 2022 Jewels Court consists of debutantes E’Niya Fields, Kyla Gerhardt, Kaliyah Newby, A’myiah Pittman, and Anya Robinson. In preparation for the ball, their former formal debut to society, each debutante has participated in educational opportunities related to adequate financial self-esteem and self-preparedness. They showcase their talents through music and art in a luncheon on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Most importantly, each debutante has been allowed to give back to the community through hours of community service. Ukraine Exchange Student At Jersey Community High School Thanks Her Community For Their Support

GRAFTON - In the spring of your junior year, an average teenager might be touring colleges or thinking about a summer job. But for Kateryna Savienkova, an exchange student from Ukraine attending Jersey Community High School, making plans was impossible. On June 3rd, the war in Ukraine had reached day 100 and Kateryna was still unclear where she would spend the next year of her life. Today, Kateryna has completed a full academic year of high school in America, an opportunity she worked hard to receive and one where she made the most of every day. Living with her host family, Jim, Carla, and Roanna Newton, in Grafton, Kateryna has made the most of her time. At school, she participated in cross country, and bowling, and was an honor roll student. Back in her home country of Ukraine a much different story played out for her family and friends. Deceased In House Fire Identified As 68-Year-Old Man

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - The deceased in a house fire in the 3000 block of Hatherly Drive in the City of Bel-Norhas been identified as John Prowell, 68 years of age, of the 3000 block of Hatherly Drive in Bel-Nor, Missouri 63121. Preliminary investigation by the St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit reveals the fire does not appear to be criminal in nature, however, the exact cause is undetermined at this time. St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons Detectives are currently investigating the fire which resulted in the death of an adult male. On July 10, 2022, at 1:26 AM, City of Bel-Nor police officers responded to a call for service for a house fire in the 3000 block of Hatherly Drive. Responding officers located a home partially engulfed in flames. An adult male was located inside the residence. He was transported to an area hospital and was later pronounced deceased. Female Identified In Homicide In City Of Riverview

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - The deceased has been identified in a homicide in the 300 block of Chambers Road in the City of Riverview as Laruth Jones, 34 years of age, of the 9900 block of Lilac Drive in St. Louis, Missouri 63137. During the commission of the homicide, the victim’s red Mercedes was stolen. The vehicle was later recovered in an alley near E. Linton Avenue and Emily Street in St. Louis City. The vehicle had been burned and was unoccupied. St. Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating the homicide which resulted in the death of an adult female. On July 10, 2022, at 5:02 PM, City of Riverview police officers responded to a call for service for a shooting in the 300 block of Chambers Road. Responding officers located an adult female suffering from an apparent gunshot injury. IDOT Announces Intermittent Lane Closures On Illinois Route 109 Between U.S. 67 and Illinois Route 3

JERSEYVILLE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announces intermittent lane closures on Illinois Route 109 between U.S. 67 and Illinois Route 3 beginning on Monday, July 18, 2022, weather permitting. IDOT said two-way traffic will be maintained by the use of flaggers. This closure is needed to construct a new asphalt surface and it should be completed by October of 2022. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, be alert to changing conditions, obey all construction signage, and refrain from using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone. The contractor on this project is Charles E. Mahoney Co. of Swansea, Illinois. Kaldi's Coffee reopening Citygarden location in downtown St. Louis

Coffee lovers who work in or visit downtown St. Louis will soon have another place to grab a cup and a pastry. After being closed since March 2020, at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kaldi's Coffee is reopening its location in downtown St. Louis at Citygarden. Kaldi's made the announcement on its Instagram page Tuesday, saying the location at 808 Chestnut St. will reopen Monday, July 18.
