Man Fondly Remembers Chris, A Well-Known Alton Person, Who Left Behind Many Friends

2 years 11 months ago
(EDITOR'S NOTE: This letter writer has asked to remain anonymous, but he wanted to share his story of Chris, who was found deceased this week in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot. Riverbender.com continues with another story about Chris on Saturday). Someone we all knew died this week, although you may not have known her name. If you lived in the Riverbend area, I’m certain that you walked or drove by her many times over the past 30 years, but whether you truly saw her may be in doubt. For years, I didn’t see her either. Yet we all knew her as the woman with the artificial leg that limped through town pushing the baby carriage carrying all her possessions. You may have given her money, or you may have given her grief. I suspect that, like all of us, she deserved both at varying times. I want you to know this: Her name was Chris, and she was my friend. On Monday morning, Chris showed me a discarded curtain that she had found and remarked on how beautiful it was

Women Missouri State Senators work across the aisle to improve childhood literacy

2 years 11 months ago
The ability to read is fundamental to learning in all school subjects and every aspect of life. However, Missouri’s kids are ranked below 19 other states in fourth grade reading level. State Sen. Jill Schupp joined St. Louis on the Air to discuss what she and her fellow women State Senators are doing to support students that are struggling in reading, as well as a new children’s book she co-authored with every woman State Senator in Missouri’s history.

Anti-abortion organizers prepare for post-Roe realities in Missouri and Illinois

Two local anti-abortion advocates heralded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. But they say their work isn’t done even though abortions are illegal in almost all instances in Missouri. This conversation follows one earlier in the week with two abortion rights supporters. Editor’s Note: The guests claimed that “contraceptives can cause what’s called abortifacients,” a drug that causes an abortion. That’s not true. Contraceptives, including Plan B, do not cause an abortion. They prevent fertilization. Pregnancy only occurs when a fertilized egg has been implanted in the wall of the uterus. A guest also claimed that “for a woman to take contraception of any form, it is not healthy for her.” The medical community agrees that while there are some risks associated with birth control, “all methods of contraception are considered okay for healthy women.”

Verizon Gives OAN The Axe, Upsetting The Six People Who Still Watch The Channel

2 years 11 months ago
When last we checked in with One America News (OAN), it was trying (with the help of numerous Republican AGs) to pretend that DirecTV’s decision to boot the barely watched conspiracy network from its cable lineup was part of a vast, diabolical cabal to censor conservatives (it wasn’t). OAN more recently attacked Verizon, the last […]

Flipping burgers and keeping a St. Louis original alive for nearly 70 years

2 years 11 months ago
Chuck-A-Burger is one of the most iconic places to get a bite to eat in the St. Louis area. It is a spot in North County cloaked in nostalgia. It will take you back to the days of big-bodied cars with big chrome fenders. “You are literally driving into 1957. The atmosphere just reeks of 1957,” said restaurant owner Ron Stille. 1957 is when Chuck-A-Burger was established and became a hangout for local cruisers. “Friday nights and Saturday nights, it was packed,” said Stille. The way the…
