Although festivals are common during the summer, it’s not often that a festival gives back to the community, and the Festival of Nations in St. Louis does just that. Festival of Nations is returning to St. Louis on August 26 and 27, hosted by the International Institute of St. Louis (IISTL). It is the largest multicultural event of the year to showcase diverse cultures, create awareness and enrich the community by helping the IISTL support immigrants and refugees to prosper in their communities, cultures, and careers through a variety of services. This year, the festival is excited about its new emphasis on the musical lineup as it puts focus on the importance of diversity and music throughout the festival. I thought the Festival of Nations would make for a great story on why an appreciation for international music matters.

The Festival that Gives Back: Festival of Nations not only celebrates the bridging cultures, but inspires action as the event directly funds the International Institute of St. Louis’ work within the region to provide critical services to refugees and immigrants including educational opportunities, workforce solutions, resettlement services, and social services. Since the year 2000, the International Institute has welcomed nearly 12,000 people as they look to resettle in St. Louis, and through programs and services, supported thousands more.
Community Impact Through Music and Food: The festival features ethnic performances that educate the public and create a more knowledgeable atmosphere. The ability for international artists to honor their heritage through song and dance helps promote a more inclusive community. The festival also engages people in new cultures by showcasing international food. These experiences help foster a more welcoming St. Louis as more refugees settle into town.
Nominated as ‘Best Festival’ in the St. Louis Magazine A-List Readers' Choice Awards, this two-day celebration is a public expression of the International Institute of St. Louis’ work to embrace multiculturalism and to reinforce the simple truth that what makes us different is what makes us richer and stronger.
