One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market

Come out and experience the One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market right here in St. Louis! Starting Saturday April 2nd, this USDA-funded Farmers Market will be held 10am-3pm weekly at the Gary Brooks Community Garden, 4031 W. Florissant Ave. in St. Louis, at the intersection of Alice Avenue.
The One Africa! One Nation! (OAON) Farmers Market is a blueprint for African self-reliance and self-determination, providing access to fresh, healthy food to the black community, end food apartheid and create community commerce by building relationships with black farmers and vendors. Local farmers and growers will be accepting EBT/SNAP for fresh fruits and vegetables, with more variety available with the growing season.
The One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market will be a popular destination where people can experience the vibrant flavors, cooking styles, foods, entertainment and products that represent the culture of black people from the Caribbean to the African continent to our popular St. Louis BBQ. OAON’s parent organization, the African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) is uniquely positioned to make this market a success in North St. Louis City. We have 15 years of experience building and managing the One Africa! One Nation! Marketplace in Philadelphia that has incubated more than 24 businesses.
The farmer’s market will play a vital role in combatting food apartheid in the northside community. Establishing a farmers market where there is food apartheid provides access to local and regional agricultural products that would otherwise be difficult to obtain, and will allow residents to use their SNAP benefits. This also improves access to fresh locally grown produce for low income/low access customers by utilizing EBT/SNAP and other programs in communities located in areas of concentrated poverty with limited access to supermarkets or locally or regionally grown food. Farmers benefit from increased sales in markets that utilize these programs.
At the sight of what used to be a condemned and demolished building, the Farmer’s Market will be held at the beautiful Gary Brooks Community Garden. The garden, created entirely by the Northside black community as a part of the African People's Education and Defense Fund's Black Power Blueprint program for economic development, is a testament in and of itself to the Northside community’s commitment to replace the impoverished Northside with a beautiful, prosperous black community.
Be a part of the forward progress of our community. Bring the family and come on out to the One Africa! One Nation! Farmer’s Market!
