Big Boy No. 4014 Steam Engine Captivates Crowds in Madison County

GRANITE CITY — The Union Pacific “Big Boy” No. 4014 steam locomotive rolled through the Madison County area Tuesday evening, captivating railroad enthusiasts and casual observers alike. Hundreds of spectators lined the tracks to photograph and view the passage of No. 4014, a marvel of engineering and a relic of a bygone era. Sporting a 4-8-8-4 articulated wheel arrangement and stretching to a length of more than 132 feet, the engine is one of 25 examples of the largest successful steam locomotive ever built. It is the only one of the eight remaining operable. ALCO built No. 4014 in November 1941 at a cost of $265,174 ($5,493,000 in 2023 ) and delivered it the following month to Union Pacific, which placed it in revenue service. The locomotives were produced by the American Locomotive Company between 1941 and 1944 and were used by Union Pacific for heavy freight service on Sherman Hill, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Henesey has allowed only eight goals in net for Alton in the first six matches as the Redbirds are off to a tremendous start, one of the best starts for the Redbirds in many season. Dawson embarked on his journey in June and is traveling with his loyal German shepherd, Jade. Dawson decided to undertake this river expedition and seize the moment to explore the river. "I chose to spend money while I can," Dawson said. "It means the world to me; I've been waiting a long time." Jade, who has been with Dawson for eight years, provides companionship and security during the trip. "She has guard duty during the night and sleeps in the canoe during the day," Dawson noted. GRANITE CITY - At approximately 6:08 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2024, the Granite City Police Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash on southbound Nameoki Road at the Pontoon Road overpass. The victim sustained serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased on the scene by the Madison County Coroner’s Office. "This case is still under investigation and no further information will be released at this time," Major Gary Brooks of the Granite City Police Department said. CAHOKIA HEIGHTS - The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is now investigating a Monday night, Sept. 9, 2024, fatal Cahokia Heights shooting. Lt. Shane Brown of the Belleville Police Department will serve as deputy commander in the investigation. Authorities said the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office was called for a shooting in the 2400 block of Renois Lane in Cahokia Heights about 7:20 p.m. on Monday. When the sheriff’s office arrived, they discovered a man who had been shot in his vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he died, authorities said. ALTON - Improvements to a building on Henry Street are one step closer to getting a funding boost from the City of Alton following unanimous approval from the Committee of the Whole on Monday . According to a redevelopment agreement between the City of Alton and Honke Properties LLC, the city has agreed to reimburse the developer for up to $18,636 of the project cost upon its completion. These funds would be generated through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and would cover about 25% of the project’s estimated total of $74,545. Natalie is a paper-cutting artist. Paper cutting is an old art form that dates back to the fourth century, and it is not commonly seen in today’s art scene. Natalie discovered the art of paper cutting in 2008. She started as a hobby and got good at it. Friends told her that she should do something with the new skill she honed. She toyed with the idea, but she was busy with so many other things, including trying to stay in a corporate job that wasn’t a good fit for her.
