100 Years Ago: Piasa Bird Painting Dedicated

ALTON - On October 5, 1924, at 2:00 p.m., the Piasa Bird painting by Boy Scout and Alton High School Student Herbert Forcade on the bluffs at the end of Prospect Street was dedicated. W.D. Armstrong, president of the Madison County Historical Society, announced the program in the Alton Evening Telegraph several days before the event. The official schedule included the songs “America” and “Illinois,” played by the Franklin Quartette, a reading of “The Legend of the Piasa Bird,” by John D. McAdams, and speeches by Illinois Senator H.G. Giberson, President of the Local Council of Boy Scouts Eben Rodgers, Gilson Brown on behalf of the City of Alton, and others. The attendance “surpassed expectation, and was a most gratifying manifestation of appreciation of Alton people for the efforts…put forth to restore the picture on the bluff which workmen quarried away near three quarters of a century ago.” The original Piasa Bird painting

Free Laptops Initiative Gets Alton City Council Approval

ALTON - The Alton City Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to provide 350 free laptops to “low-income, unconnected” households within the City of Alton. The city will provide $68,250 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to Alton Forward, the nonprofit arm of AltonWorks, to purchase the 350 laptops. While exact details are still unknown, they will reportedly be distributed on a “first-come, first-serve basis,” according to the resolution. EDWARDSVILLE — A 17-year-old teen was reported found "safe and sound," by the Madison County Sheriff's Office on Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2024. The Madison County Sheriff's Office had asked for the public's assistance earlier Thursday in locating a missing 17-year-old boy - Kameron Hildebrand-Johnson from Edwardsville. He was described as a male with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen leaving his home in northern unincorporated Edwardsville on the evening of October 9, 2024. Kameron stands approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs around 130 pounds. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a gray t-shirt and cut-off blue jeans. The sheriff's office did not disclose details regarding the circumstances of his disappearance.

Madison Man Released In Fifth Domestic Battery Case

MADISON - A man from Madison has been granted pretrial release after being charged with his fifth offense of domestic battery. Sanchez Wooten, 39, of Madison, was charged with aggravated battery, a Class 2 felony, and domestic battery, his fifth or subsequent such offense and another Class 2 felony. On Sept. 12, 2024, Wooten allegedly strangled a household or family member and struck them in the back of the head with his hands, causing bodily harm. Wooten has previously been charged with domestic battery on four occasions, including twice in 2017 and once in 2021 in Madison County, as well as once in 2020 in St. Louis County, Mo. The Madison Police Department presented the latest domestic battery case against Wooten, who was granted pretrial release from custody. The issuance of charges is based solely upon probable cause and is not an indication of guilt. All subjects charged with criminal offenses are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Alton Man Charged With Battery Of Child

ALTON - A man from Alton has been charged with battery against a 12-year-old child and domestic battery against another victim in the same case. DeMario D. Greenlee, 32, of Alton, was charged with aggravated battery (a Class 4 felony) and domestic battery (a Class A misdemeanor). On Sept. 27, 2024, Greenlee allegedly struck a 12-year-old child “in the mouth with a closed fist, causing a laceration” after he threw a household or family member “to the ground, causing pain,” according to court documents. A petition to deny Greenlee’s pretrial release reveals the 12-year-old was struck while attempting to intervene during the domestic battery incident. “Victim reported that her boyfriend, the defendant, became angry during an argument and threw her to the ground,” the petition states. “Victim's 12-year-old son observed this and moved to intervene, and the defendant struck him in the face with a closed fist, causing a laceration.”
